Can anyone please explain to me why people around here get so upset about Destiny's story or lack thereof but Dark Souls gets praised as a masterpiece? They basically are exactly the same, extremely obscure and what little of the confusing story is in item descriptions or grimoire. Is it really just because you have to use an app in destiny to view them? That is really the only thing I can see that's different.
Dark Souls even has a contest going where they will pay someone $10k if they can explain it. Best to my knowledge no one has won it yet.

Souls has a hugely deep lore. It just doesn't read it to you as a bedtime story. It is in the game. You just have to look.
-
Because story isn't the focus of a Souls game and is not even advertised as such.
-
From what I can understand without playing it myself Dark Souls tells its story through the game rather than separating story and game, whereas destiny separates story and game so far that you need to find the story online

3 RepliesI beat destiny in two days. Currently at 100 hrs in DS3 One is a generic shooter. The other is a REAL RPG

Casuals can't stop contradicting themselves, thats why.
-
Because you can find out Dark Souls through the items that you get and dialogue. (all included in game.) While Destiny's you have to go out of your way and read grimoire on Bungie.net

19 RepliesThe contest you're talking about was ended a long time ago. Your knowledge is about 6 months old. And it means nothing, because many people can describe the story of dark souls. It's not hard. Anyways. The reason for this is all in execution. Destiny attempts the same story telling technique as dark souls, but fails. Because it didn't fully understand why the dark souls story telling works. Destiny tries too hard to be a story driven game when in reality it's story is weak and it's lore isn't even in game. DS knows its focus is combat, but it's still supported by a minimalistic story and a very in depth(and in game) lore that explains pretty much everything in the game(as an example, we know that the universe of DS is cyclical. History is doomed to repeat. We see this in the death mechanic, NG+, sequels, etc.). Regardless, Dark Souls does a great deal of world building. Not only is the beginning cinematic very well executed(not so much in Destiny), but the narrative each game drives is done so well that it doesn't need a heavy hand of cinematics. Also, every boss/enemy in Dark Souls has a past, and we have a reason to fight him. In destiny, it's just "yeah he's an alien commander...go get him?" Dark Souls doesn't hold your hand. But it gives you enough information that you can draw your own conclusions. Which is another great thing about it. Fan theories. You have all these clues that lead to Point A but nothing exists there. Fans are able to draw their own conclusion as to what Point A is. Some may say this is lazy story telling, I say it's inconclusive. What's the fun in having such an interesting world if you can't dream a little? If you're given all information, with no mysteries, then what's to think about? Anyways, while its not the best technique of story telling out there, the execution is what matters. And FromSoft has perfected the execution. World building Narrative Lore Etc.

Edited by ALIAS-F4LS: 5/24/2016 2:23:36 PMDestiny is a story driven narrative where you have a clear story with a few questions but it was chopped up into DLC. Dark Souls is intentionally obscure to create a sense of mystery and make you try to read the landscape along with read the lore that is attached to your armor (no bouncing between game and some website with the answers) essentially it's a mystery game where you fight your way through a dead land figuring out what happened and who wore this armor before you layed eyes on it. Sure that's not the main objective of the game but it's deffinitely something players should do.

I made this thread a while back. It essentially boils down to the bulk of Destiny's story not actually being in the game.
-
I doubt anyone's saying dark souls' "stories" are masterpieces. Dark souls' narratives are purposely obscure, with little in the way of traditional filmic movie sequences. Destiny, however, goes full-on with extended Hollywood blockbuster style movie sequences, but fails miserably with poor dialogue and storytelling. Taken King improved matters a little, but not by much

Edited by DecidingReaper: 5/24/2016 3:50:40 PMBecause you have to go to a website to get the lore. Because even with data dump characters spoon feeding story, Destiny's story is still lacking coherent narrative. Because for Dark Souls it's a stylistic choice since the first installment and for Destiny it feels extremely forced. Because Destiny back peddled and added fmv sequences to start telling the story. (Admittedly better than vanilla) Because while some grimoire cards are well written, the lore doesn't all explain the how's and why's of the world we're inhabiting. Quite to the contrary, most just feel very disjointed from the narrative now. Quite simply, Dark Souls does minimalist story telling well, while Destiny fantasizes about being Dark souls, Halo, Elder Scrolls, WoW and Diablo all rolled into one and fails to excel at any of its goals.

We already had this thread. Next.
-
Because Destiny's story is on a website and not actually read-able in game.

Edited by Kone19ps: 5/24/2016 12:46:12 PMYou are so woefully uninformed. Down to where you find bodies and what's on them is important to the lore. There is zero rng to it except resources which you can improve to almost a guarantee with items and the luck stat. It all matters for what you do and it's all IN GAME You have a near open world that uses its lore to enrich itself. Barely anything in the destiny world is coherent with itself. Ghosts are in random locations not planned. Destiny is an incredibly poor imitation

Edited by Bob: 5/24/2016 12:21:46 PMDark Souls doesn't get praised as a masterpiece because of it's story. it gets praised of it's difficulty (not that hard imo) and of it's beauty that gets put into the areas. Edit: But the Dark Souls story is easy to follow. civilization fall where many of the ancient lords became corrupt. you go and you kill them all to become to true heir of cinder. etc etc
-
7 RepliesBecause Dark Souls was the fall of a civilization, and everything adds to the story unlike Destiny. You can go read any description in game and get part of a story. Destiny has all of it out of game and it doesn't really build on the lack of in game.
-
2 RepliesWell the difference is the story in dark souls in in the item descriptions and environments While in Destiny you need to gave the app just to learn the backstory to shit. That being said i hate both games for being so -blam!-ing vague but i still enjoy dark souls 3.
-
>Wolf K***ht Great Sword front flips off the stage into the arena like a Badass. Immediately surpasses scrub status.
-
Because dark souls adds up, and is relevant, and if you read all the destiny grimuoire you don't know much more than the next guy.
-
I think someone did win the contest a while back. Don't count me on it though.

Edited by bip: 5/24/2016 5:50:48 AMDark Souls explains it through subtle visual cues, item descriptions, and vague backstories gathered from dialogue. Destiny succeeds at the former (Such as the environment in the Cosmodrome showing why the last ship never took off) and the latter (NPC dialogue in the tower can be pretty fascinating), but by relegating the descriptions of the backstory to the Bungie website instead of having it in-game, it flows very poorly. Destiny still does a damn good job presenting its lore, but Dark Souls just does it more naturally.
-
Simply put, Bungie scrapped the story after they made the game. So they shoehorned a new story into the grimoire cards. Dark Souls had consistent and solid lore, albeit vague. I think if Bungie had the same vision from concept to launch, it could have been pulled off quite well. The downside to rewriting the story was that a lot of the visual storytelling in the environments was jumbled up and didn't make a lot of sense in the end. So much of what you see in Dark Souls is relevant to the lore of the game (DaS2 being something of an exception). The environment, the enemies, the skybox and more. They also unknowingly made a game that attracted MMO players and were clueless as to how to react to that. Dark Souls was aimed at a solo experience with some PVP and Jolly co-op, which is exactly what they were aiming for. Hopefully Destiny 2 does the whole thing a lot better... But I'm not holding my breath at this point. I've never been a fan of space westerns (sorry Firefly) and that seems to be Bungie's angle on Destiny. Except it's a 50s spaghetti western, mixed with an 80s action movie. So, so much cheese.
-
1) yes because you have to leave the game for destiny lore. 2) just because they have similar styles (which they don't) doesn't mean anything. Dark souls writes better. Period. Both are vague. But destiny is told to you via an app and by it being spoon fed to you. Dark souls main lore comes from item descriptions. And sometimes npcs. Which is totally different.
-
To me, it is because Destiny was advertised as a story-based game, while Dark Souls doesn't do that.

1 ReplyEdited by Vgnut: 5/24/2016 3:02:02 AMA staple of games in the Souls genre is that the item descriptions are rich with lore. I've never seen a Destiny item rich with lore. Destiny needs a metric -blam!- ton of items to work. Games with loot needs lots of loot. Souls games don't need the same level of items. Each item is carefully crafted, unique, and woven into the story. You can't do that with Destiny or any loot driven game. Then of course there is the Grimoire card fiasco. One of the most baffling development decisions I've ever seen. I actually don't think Destiny's universe and lore are all that bad. In fact I think Bungie has created a striking and original universe. The issue was delivery method and where it was delivered in game it was presented in a cringe worthy matter. TTK made strides towards a better quality standard.
