Fleeing the Fallen -Part 6

Part 5 https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/203999434 Part 6 The barrage of arc energy abruptly stopped and Jorn risked a quick glance out at the alien patrol. Upon seeing the charging Fallen, he fired again and hurled a bullet into the crowd, not really aiming for any one particular target. He then snatched up the makeshift spear before racing back toward the central pillar. The moment he abandoned the wall, however, he once again heard the sizzling reports of Fallen weaponry. A pair of bolts stabbed past him, and a third raked his scalp. Jorn could taste and smell his own blood and burnt hair. Yet another sizzled by, clipping his shoulder. He crouched low and kept moving. He chanted his mantra over and over as he hurried “Lure in the Fallen, and bri-“ Jorn was suddenly struck from behind. The force from the hit knocked the wind out of him and sent him sprawling into the dirt. Terrible pain radiated from his side and he struggled to breathe. Looking down at the source of the pain, he could see an awful wound on his entire left side below the armpit. The pain was unbelievable, but Jorn tore his eyes away from the angry red burn and locked his gaze back onto the central pillar. “Bring the building down” he grunted through gritted teeth. A vicious, hungry cry rang out and Jorn turned to see a seven foot tall Vandal vault the wall and leap toward him, its twin arc swords were raised and ready to cut him down. In frantic desperation Jorn swung up the spear, and through a stroke of luck, impaled the leaping Fallen on the wickedly sharp shock dagger lashed to the end of it. The spear caught the Vandal below the ribs, and as the other end of it wedged into the rubble, the Vandal caught on the spearhead slammed to a halt with a scream. Dropping its swords, three of its hands gripped the spear haft in anguish, but the fourth one curled into a fist and connected with Jorn’s face with a sickening crunch. The blow knocked Jorn against the far wall as the Vandal fell to the floor, still trying to remove the spear. Working to focus through the pain, Jorn considered trying to rip the spear loose. But in that same instant two more Fallen bounded over the wall and into the ruins. He could see many more immediately on their heels and charging into the ancient building in a fury. Abandoning the spear, he snatched up one of the Vandal’s arc swords, and raced to the pillar. He punched the grenade’s activation switch and, holding his side, hurried out the far end of the ruin. As the grenade came alive, the entire pack of Fallen poured into the ruin. At the heart of the group was the colossal Fallen officer and its terrible shrapnel launcher. It was so large that it blocked out the light as it ducked into the building, and its deep, terrible roar shook the very ground. Suddenly the grenade electromagnetically clamped itself onto the pillar and glowed white hot for a instant before detonating in a terrific blast of lightning and shrapnel. From outside, Jorn heard the cries of the wounded Fallen, it sounded like the grenade had really done some damage. Alongside them however was that deep bellowing roar, and it sounded almost as if it were laughing at the feeble attack. A moment later though, even that rumbling Fallen laughter was poisoned with fear before being drowned out entirely by the terrible groan of the ruins collapsing. With a deafening crash, all three stories –tons of stone- came crashing down on the Fallen. Gripping his side in agony, Jorn rushed away from the crushing stone as massive chunks of ancient rock and metal cracked apart and tumbled into the grass. A blinding cloud of thick dust enveloped him, and unable to see, he continued to hurry away from the crashing sound. In seconds it was all over. The cloud of dust slowly settled, and Jorn stood motionless for a moment, exhausted and holding his wounded side, looking back out over the battle site. Luck really had been with him. He pulled the strange coin medallion from his shirt and gave it another kiss before tucking it back into his clothing. Then, grimacing from the pain, he hefted up the Fallen arc sword and hobbled away into the tall grass to find the others. Part 7: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/205062239
