The Overton window, also known as the window of discourse, is the range of ideas the public will accept. It is used by media pundits.
Definition: This scale is used to help determine where on the political spectrum the majority of the public resides. For example, in my home country of Canada, the Overton window is centrist to centre-right, according to the majority of the world's political standards. We are centre-left socially (progressive) and centre-right fiscally (economic liberalism).
America: The United States is, according to the Overton Window, one of the most right-wing, industrialized, modern nations on the planet, with same sex marriage only being legalized 11 months ago and abortion, being legal nationwide since 1973, which itself is impressive. Marijuana is still illegal on a federal level, assisted dying is the same, and social systems including single payer healthcare, a living wage and affordable or free tuition are completely non-existent. On an economic note, the U.S. prides itself to be staunchly pro-capitalist and has caused a massive backlash of left-wing ideas due to relentless government propaganda over the last century. Religious fundamentalism and even Christian terrorism is a major issue as well, with people discriminating and causing bodily harm or public damage based on religion.
While the rest of the world advances and becomes more progressive, the U.S., unless they adapt to the times, will continue to lag behind the developed world, and could one day become irreverent.

While the rest of the world advances and becomes more progressive, the U.S., unless they adapt to the times, will continue to lag behind the developed world, and could one day become irreverent.
"The U.S. is wrong and stupid because it doesn't comply with my set of principles."

4 RepliesLol. I thought this was going to be an actual conversation until I read the last paragraph. Really? America has some of the largest military, economy, population, and political influence in the world. It'll just became "irrelevant" and disappear off the map? You're just one of those conspiracy theory, anti America basement dwellers. Muted.
