I personally find it easier to be effective (in the beginning)with a sniper than a shotty, I mean not all the fancy shots but it feels easier to keep your distance and "surprise" someone with a sniper. Closing the distance to effective range (shotgun, hand cannon, sidearm) is harder IMO... I guess they even out in the end. Agree with Mdash.
