In your opinion What exactly makes someone a hero? Is it measured based on how big of an impact their actions have. is it based on intentions, their results, or their methods. Is it based on sacrifices/risks they make or are willing to make. Is it based on motivation or on specific character traits ex: bravery, selflessness, honesty, humbleness. For both real and fictional heroes what factors do you believe have the most impact on whether or not someone is a hero.
Edit: im not writing an essay based on this question, but everyone keeps assuming i am. This was meant to be a thought provoking question not help a NlGGA out foundation for writing essays.

A hero is someone who, in the end, tries their best to do what's right.

5 RepliesDon't ever write a hero. Instead write a human being. Have them react to actions in a way the character would behave. Maybe they will become a hero to some, or a villain to others. Don't write a hero when you can treat yourself to a fully developed character instead.

2 RepliesThe whole "hero" concept is rather vague in regards to modern interpretation. There's no definite example or definition of what makes a "hero" a hero. Example: a person who fights for their own country could be viewed as a patriotic/nationalistic hero but may be viewed as a villain towards outside countries/groups. You also have individuals who were regarded as heroes for their morals/beliefs rather than their actions. When you say "hero" what exactly are you talking about? Someone with strong morals who isn't as easily corrupted by selfish desires? A person who puts the lives of those less capable before his/her own? Look back at post heroes, kings and conquerers like Vladimir Tepes, Alexander the Great or Constantine. The concept of what is considered heroic can only be decided either though those who act as observers or the individual them-self.

"You either die quick enough to become a hero, or live long enough to become the villain" From this, I can deduce that a good hero, is a dead hero

Edited by Damp: 5/10/2016 6:13:39 PMA TRUE hero's only motivation is doing good for goodness sake. It doesn't mater if it's world changing or the smallest of tasks, like helping an elderly person get the cereal on the top shelf. It, also, doesn't matter what they have to give, but will only give their all when when the risk is too great. They must be selfless. A hero can be motivated by petty things, like fame and fortune. A hero can be selfish in their desires. It doesn't make them bad people but not TRUE hero's. Hero's can be almost anybody. I believe there's a bit of heroism in all of us. Anybody can be seen as a hero for their actions, but the difference between TRUE hero's and others is primarily in motivation. A TRUE hero's only motivation is doing good for goodness sake. TL;DR - A hero can be anybody, but a TRUE hero doesn't need a reason to not be an asshole.
