With this recent update, lore doesn't matter anymore.
Everything will be reset when "Destiny 2: We hit the reset button" drops in 2017.

The lore of Destiny will live on far past D2. This isn't some temporary story book, but the history (and possibly future (Exo Stranger)) of this universe that we play in. Do you think D2 is going to be in a separate universe (is that even possible?)? I can assure you it will not.

There's a difference between our progress being reset and the lore/story. With a singular possible exception, it's all very consistent and continues to broaden our understanding of this universe as the story moves forward.
