Campaign - Halo Reach
Intro - Nine years of doing one thing will make you a master of your craft, so it should be no surprise that Halo: Reach is Bungie’s most Polished Halo game to date.(it's my fav) Which is surprisingly more detailed than previous Halos considering the lack of develop time. Bungie’s last attempt at the Halo universe has them crafting the most sophisticated gameplay you’ve ever played in a shooter, while adding their best story yet.
Gameplay - It is almost redundant by now to praise Bungie for having intuitive gameplay; it’s fast, tense, and incredibly well thought out in terms of level design and set piece battles. The addition of the armour abilities and the incredible AI make the game challenging and frenetic in terms of minute-to-minute action. While it was frustrating at times to die from random blasts, it turned the game into a trial and error, that created an interesting tension that hung on every decision you make on the battle field, which are markedly more vast than previous Halo games. Replaying a battle never felt monotonous, which Destiny lacks severely. Approaching a situation is a dynamic task that is made all the more interesting with the constant barrage of lateral events happening at once, and it takes careful planning to learn exactly where you should run in like a boss, and where you should take your time.
Epic - This game even had space combat in it. Which the controls were workable and the gameplay was immense and a lot of fun, blowing shit up in space. Taking on a Covenant Corvette, while dealing with constant enemy reinforcements of Banshees, Seraphs. This was expected in Destiny, yet again disappointment.
Immersion - The most compelling aspect of Reach was the emphasis on making you feel outnumbered and outmatched, which was accomplished largely by the ruthless AI covenant forces. Whereas in Destiny it just feels so artificial, with AI spawning constantly, it doesn't feel like a war, it feels like a simulation. The enemies themselves are very detailed & appear intimidating, they are bigger and stronger than your character. The player should completely disregard any preconceptions of AI behavior, as enemies will flank, roll, take their time, and even bait in an attempt to expose you to multiple enemy fire at once.
In terms of story telling, Bungie actually knows how to write a story & implement it in the game. The story starts of on a bad note, relying on characters that have yet to be realized. But as the game continues, you the characters get fleshed out to quite a degree and their traits become tied to their ends. The narrative was compelling, what was the fate of Reach, while we knew the end from the beginning, what would happen to Noble Team. The epic ending leading well into an incredible Credits segment that underlines the forgone desperate conclusion to the planet Reach – one of the best endings for a game I have played so far.
Overall, Halo: Reach is a first-class example of a science fiction shooter, plain and simple - What Destiny should be. The universe is fully realized, the gameplay is high-quality and implemented flawlessly, and the story is relatable enough to which anybody can understand what is at stake. The latter point I think is what transcends Reach from other Halo games is because of the Serious tone.
Campaign - Destiny
Intro - Destiny is an always-online first-person shooter from Bungie, the studio that created Halo. It’s set in our solar system, in the future, and puts you in the role of an anonymous Guardian, just a unexplained dead guy - revived. As you run around in the game, you’ll see lots of other identical Guardians going about similar tasks, with the same armor, weapons as you. There are no friendly AIs in-game, which is quite lacking considering Bungie's talent in that area. Thanks in part to the game’s popularity, there are always other people around - this is essential as the game is a boring husk without friends.
Story - Seriously - You’ve be brought back to shoot a bunch of aliens in order to help…save the world…or rather, help… well, it’s not quite clear what you’re really doing, actually. You’re shooting things. That’s pretty much what you’re doing.
Progression - All that shooting is imbued onto a character-leveling structure. As you play, the game provides regular drips of experience points, which allow you to level up (mainly by playing the story will level you up, with the endgame putting you above the max level), which in turn grant you new abilities like Nova Bomb, Fist of Havoc, Blink and so on.
Repetitive formula - Shoot enemies, get XP, and level up. Shoot more enemies, get more XP, and level up again. Once you hit level 20, you go and shoot enemies, get new gear, and use that gear to level up. That’s pretty much all there is to do.
The gunplay is akin to Reach, yet improved. It has the best gunplay on the market. It's just so polished and Flawless. Shame many avoid it in Crucible, as they are too busy spamming Supers, high aim assist weapons.
The Gameplay is lacking, is just an on-foot shooter, the vehicles are too far and few between. Supers do substitute for that, to a degree. The battles take place in Corridors, and small areas. Not very intuitive level design - Run to point B, Fight 3 waves of enemies at Point B, then Run to Point C, and fight a boss there. Super repetitive, yet progression relies on this...
Overall, Destiny is a first-class example of a failure, plain and simple - What Destiny should be, isn't. The universe is just not in the game. It's a very interesting and detailed Universe, shame it's trapped in the Grimoire. The Gunplay is high-quality and implemented flawlessly, and the story is non-existent.
Well this took like an hour and a half... These games are relatable on some notes, and incompatible on others, hence the difference in Segmentation - aka Immersion for Reach, and Progression for Destiny.
Transparency - Because I'm not the best writer, & I found it difficult to write some sections. - I took some segments from Reviews and edited them to fit my perspective.
FYI - this account is an alternate, my main is in my bio.
- Stop bringing up Halo 3...

10 RepliesI love Halo Reach. I still play it. Even on the 360 still. I really hope 343 doesn't remaster this game. I want to be playing a Halo game that can still be called HALO
-
Well reach was such a good game
-
Halo Reach's campaign was awesome.
-
You my kind sir are a royal -blam!-ing retard, the games come close in many ways and the campaigns are both amazing, but.. The fact is destiny expanded more beyond the Xbox unlike halo which only has one system the multiplayer online features for destiny go beyond what people are asking for and even when people started to criticize the game bungee jumped on and started to make big fixes to the expanding world.. The way you put that could have been more carefully worded but the sad truth is halo reach comes accurately close to destiny in the gaming world but not everyone has an Xbox and destiny is on both Xbox and PlayStation.. That is the only reason I disagree with you, thank you but your argument is invalid.
-
You know what,... After all my days playing Reach and all the fun and experiences it gave me.. I just can't argue with this. I can get into real detail on why it is an amazing game but I'll just say this, I played every piece of that game. From PVE to PVP. I played the campaign more times than I can count, on every difficulty. And you know what, I enjoyed the living fuçk out of it. You know you're playing a timeless gem game when you're doing campaign on Legendary with skulls activated... and you're STILL having a blast. Took me 7 hrs to beat legendary. Felt amazing. And don't get me started on SWAT. As a competitive player I adored SWAT. It's a place where I know I was gonna run into the elite and sweaty players which is what I thrived on because the field is even all around. No head glitches, no over shield. Just a mode base on pure skill. Then you had Big Team battle which was a beast in itself. The incredible ranking system which was also based off of real skill. And then... then there was the godlike Forge. All the amazing people and friends I made with that game it's impossible to discredit Bungie for it. If only Bungie took some cues from that game they'd well be on throne for best shooter with no comp.
-
Definitely the best game made by Bungie. It was the perfect conclusion to the Bungie Halo series. One of my all time favorite games.

Halo Reach Inheritor club <3

1 ReplyOk I'll agree with you on this. Even though I hated that you said the Y1 trials emblem should be able to be earned again. All halo games beat this games story including 4 and 5.
-
Bump.
-
10 RepliesWhy are we comparing these games?
-
1 ReplyThey're both great games in my opinion, and they're both awful in the eyes of a lot of old Halo fans. Basically, it's a matter of opinion, and even though you've provided evidence (albeit, bias evidence) in expressing your point of view, I will still treat this post as 100% opinion.

I have 6000 hours plus spent on halo reach My 7th grade self regrets nothing but yeah haven't played that shit since middle school lol I do miss it
-
Tl:DR but just from the title I can agree to this

100% true

Back in the day no one has ever complained the the dmr was too strong or the community was butthurt due to the fact that there was indeed a skill-gap. The good old days....
-
Reach was awesome, but so empty compared to Destiny. Can't believe people think otherwise.
-
Not just reach, there's a lot in halo's design that did not carry over that really should have. Visual and audio cues are present in halo that are missing in destiny. It's just visually and audibly a well made game. Unlike destiny where it is almost always visually noisy and hard to see the important stuff. Destiny is also just lacking audio cues in general. It gets some important ones but its missing many important ones also. That or it's just drowned out by constant less important ones. You could easily play halo competently without a HUD, you can't with destiny. It's just one very important thing they did right with halo that they are somehow missing in destiny.
-
Agreed
-
I want space combat in destiny...I thought they were testing the waters in reach for a future release but guess not :(
-
2 RepliesTook you an hour and a half. You should've taken 2 hours to go over it and make sure there were no grammatical/spelling errors. C+
-
i mean hell the difference between reach and halo 3 is that halo 3 was supposed to be the big shabang the series send off. wake me when you need me those words would be the last until halo reach came out which pulled the danger card......... the DREADED PREQUEL!!!!!! jokes aside not saying halo reach was bad by any means but if you read the books and know what happened it would have made for a better show or short movie than a game but i will say the multiplayer was the best the series ever had!
-
1 ReplyHave you even played halo 3?
-
3 RepliesReach was a great game, but get f*cking real. Immersion? Reach had that shitty motion blur that broke the "immersion." Constantly. Immersion my ass.
-
Halo 3 was the best halo by far. Reach did have a good campaign though .
-
3 is still my favorite. Reach was also really fun but 3 was the home game. I had two friends that could play ghost busters, hot pursuit, cat and mouse, jenga, trash compactor, Mexican bull run, boxer arena, and sword duel with almost all day and all night. We used to even summon whole parties of people at any given moment. If they saw us three playing it was like nats to campfire. The single most amount of fun I've ever had in video games.
-
would have been better if you said one of the other halos, not the worst one!
