Prison of Elders, level 41: Fun or Tedious?

(Disclaimer: I started Destiny in Late November, during the last week of SRL. I've since found a team, beat up Skolas a couple times, and solo'd the level 32 arena) When I saw that the Prison was coming back, I was excited. I enjoyed the little bit I'd done of it, and the only thing thay was preventing me from farming it was the lack of Year 2 rewards. The concept is fun: go into an arena, beat up some baddies with two friends, and enjoy some sweet loot. Then... I played the 41, and I'll be honest: I was dissapointed. There's two reasons for this. The first... There aren't nearly enough rewards. I played the level 28 a few times, and I would get exotics. I'd play the level 41 a few times, and I might get a legendary engram. This might be okay if you gave us sizeable reputation gains, but as it is, it's not worth it. The second reason -- well, to put it bluntly -- the taken prison is freaking awful. It's not that it's "too hard" or anything, it's just mind-numbingly brutal. The Taken, as a whole, were poorly designed in my opinion. There isn't a single Taken version of an enemy that's more interesting to fight than one of the normal ones. [i]A new attack, on its own, isn't a new mechanic[/i], is what I'm trying to say. So when you get to the Cabal room, and you have the splitting Psions, and the air-bursting Phalanxes, and the orb-spitting Centurons, I don't think "aw man, this is about to get real." Instead, I roll my eyes, give a heavy sigh, and think, "fine." [i]And don't even get me started on the Taken Cabal boss.[/i] And, you know what, I'd be fine with the Taken Prison if I knew there could be more waiting for me than the chance of a pruple engram (destined to be a 294 piece of armor with a bad roll). And I do want to touch on one last thing: the rep booster is severely lackluster for the Prison. If you're using a Vanguard or Crucible rep booster, you can get a full rank by the time those two hours are over. With the House of Judgement rep booster, you can play the level 41 prison without breaks for all of the two hours, and you'll only get half of a rank. In any case, these are only my expiences. I know one guy in my raid team actually likes grinding out the Prison, so there's bound to be more. Also, these opinions don't reflect on the Challange of the Elders, which I feel is much more interesting as a whole.

  • boring more like you get more loot from poe 28 chest's and it's quicker to run strange coins x3 motes of light x3 materials a weapon or armour tokens ammo packs then what you do in 41

  • The Taken should not exist. It doesnt make any sense. Destiny datamining shows a chart for all the characters and races in Destiny. Wr have just scratched the surface. Its fukin annoying having recycled crap lag enemies instead of fresh ones

  • Yeah the rewards are crap compared to COE. What's more irritating is that COE is wayyyy easier than level 41 POE and it doesn't even have matchmaking.

    • They should have changed prison from 5 rounds to 3 and just made more intense modifiers. Fast and hard is better than slow and easy.

        Extremely tedious. The only real reason to do it over the 42 is if you can't find/make a team (which isn't very difficult). I don't see why the Queen's weapons (that we get from the Variks' weekly) aren't possible rewards from the final chest at a lower attack value (like 300-310). This way you could farm for the weapon/roll you want, and then use crappy weapon you got from Variks to level it up.

        I don't get how taken could be confined in a prison. I thought they could teleport through blights. And now that I think about it, how can vex be trapped in a prison. They can move through space and time.

        • Agree very tedious and the reward drops are a joke. 90% of my drops have been either low blue engrams or a few motes of light or coins. Bungie needs to both up the light limit on the items dropped and the drop rate itself. Completely different to PoE challenge were both the drop rate and the real possibility of a 335 drop makes it very satisfying.

        • Tedious, just because of the pacing. There are 5 waves, all boring up until the last one, because they hit you up with a boss. The first one is more of a warm-up, just shoot things, that's fine, it's just that everything that is trying to kill you dies as soon as it walks out the door. All the other waves have long pauses in between the waves, I can only imagine it's to give you a breather, that most of us don't need... and when you have an objective that involves the mines, the last one seems to show up after everything's said and done, so it's just this awkward moment of "is the game glitched, or just taking it's time?" as you wander around waiting for something to happen. And when you're waiting to go to the next area, I end up repeating everything that Variks is saying and shooting his servitor megaphone, because if I wasn't I would die of boredom. There's no real pressure or action, it's just like a walk in the park, except I don't want to walk in the park I wanna do something exiting, the only reason I'm in your dull park is because it's how I get sterling treasure.

        • 28 is still the place to go for strange coins and 3 of coins exotic chances. Got 200 coins to spend and still have 60 three of coins left from a few days of farming.

          • I agree with the post mainly, the rewards should be increased the taken version boss is really time spending task. There are no more any exotics drops from 41, anybody got some exotic finishing 41? It is fun however to rank up HoJ reputation and get really good weapons such (Soulstealer's Claws, Hand of Judgement), I do it mainly to get reward from Variks once ranking up.

              There's nothing particularly fun about PoE 41... the rewards from it are literally useless, opening the chest only ever nets me lower light blue items. CoE is far better with 3 boss fights in a row and scoring with your team, but for some reason bungie decided not to include matchmaking on the most straightforward game type they've made. It takes literally 0 coordination or communication from the fireteam. Regular PoE should only have 3-4 rounds, 5 rounds is way too much for a gametype that provides such little rewards, you get better rewards from low level strikes...

                It's tedious. Skolas was more of a challenge and fun and I was here sense the beginning you can see the reason why it's tedious to me.

                • Both.Fun,but gets tedious because(as you mention) the rewards are crap.It says "up to 330drops" on the article written a few weeks back,yet I haven't seen anything over 310..and I play it a lot. The only real reason to grind it is HOJ rank,because Variks gives good stuff when you rank up.I do see what you mean about the booster not doing much.I run booster constantly,but it takes about three hours to rank a level. And yes,no matter how you try,the Taken version always takes longer and is tedious as hell.I enjoy the Taken Cabal boss though.I HAAAATE those damn psions.You get one guy that doesn't focus on them and they start splitting into dozens. Pretty much I'd say you're spot on...but I still enjoy it most of the time.

                    for me the content is too easy. its just a run trough it. the reward system of that game is a joke. who cares about the light. on matchmaking conent is a 300 light cap. the raid is a choreography and not a battle. you dont fight stuff. you are forced on a location and if someone on the team dont get his part 100% ... do it again. the nightfall can be fun solo or with new players. with 3 year 1 players .... its too easy. the 320 CoE is boring. the rewards are a joke. the rng destroys the loot system. there are too many shit perks. and you need certain perks on some weapons that they are useable and fun. but you will never get that good perks. from the fraction packs you get too many class items. too much armor. and when you get a weapon it has shit perks. that whole loot system is -blam!-ed up. and the activitys and difficulty too. give hard to play content and remove rng on the rewards. give a option to tweak weapons ... once you found them in hard content.

                  • Like the old PoE, the level 41 is boring and tedious. The only interesting part of classic PoE was the boss fight at the end. That's the only reason that CoE is decent. It cuts out the crap people don't want to do (dismantle mines and kills hordes of yellows) and just gives you the boss fights.

                    • The 41 PoE is as boring and tedious as the old PoE. The only reason we run is for the Sterling Treasure, and that will only be an incentive until I pick up a taken helmet for my Warlock.

                    • i think you touched on the problems. needs to have more rep, and should have a chance to drop loot up to 335(poe specific) just like heroic strikes. obviously higher drop rate than strikes because of time investment vs running a strike.

                      Too easy, TBH. I got dropped into it alone last week for some reason and the only thing preventing me from soloing the thing in 30 minutes is since the last level is fallen and those damn mines spawn on the opposite sides of the map and you pretty much need a max agility hunter with MIDA to get across in time! Even so, the rep gains are still pretty meh, not even worth grinding for that. I run it once for my treasure box and maybe drop in once later in the week if I need to finish off the last 5-10 kills from a Variks bounty.

                    • 2x squishy Hunters...42 CoE...very doable...until final round - overwhelmed by hordes of OP Taken (NERF them! Lol) + lack of ammo...FAIL...Rinse 'n' Repeat...close, every time, but no cigar...boring...meh!?!...ENOUGH! Time for😴 Be back l8r to finish! Lol

                        For me what's tedious about it is how long it takes to level up with Varrics. If anything at least allow him to accept donations. And too be honest, the modifiers are kind of lame. If I'm not paying attention to the screen and miss the notification, I forget all about it. BUT I don't want the devs to turn around make them ridiculous and unplayable. So I'm going to be careful about what I wish for here. Personally, I've had better LL drops in PoE than any other activity. usually around 320, rarely less than 300. But it's better than the greens or 100LL blues Heroic Strikes have thrown at me.
