Shotgun Vanguard vs Sniper Sternguard, my experiences so far w/both styles.

First off, I'd like to thank all the kind folks who have taken the time to comment and offer their advice/tips in my previous threads asking for help. It's because of your suggestions that I've made so much improvement in my PvP performance. I started my Destiny PvP career focusing on sniping, I was always a better sniper than I was with a Shotgun, being a passive player (more like I was scared of dying) I tended to skirt the outside of the maps and picking off players at a distance. Yearning to improve and broaden my skill sets, I made the decision to use shotguns almost exclusively for this past month or two. It was a long painful process, I had to unlearn a lot of my habits (to include many bad ones). But eventually I improved. Slowly, but surely. Thanks to a ton of people here, sharing their tips, advice and reviewing my games. I'm happy to say that I've significantly improved my CQC skills as well as my PvP skills overall. That said, I tried sniping again recently, and I found the experience rather interesting. I found myself getting antsy, wanting to get in close and finishing off my opponents instead of sitting at a distance and patiently waiting for my opponents to screw up or push when I was at the advantage. I've noticed that my play style has changed a little when using a sniper rifle as a result of me learning how to use a shotgun. I'm more aggressive, and tend to push more, instead of playing passively like a mouse, staying at the relatively safety across the map. This isn't a slam against snipers, but being willing to take the risk is something I've learned to do more often as of late. Having the perspective from playing both styles, I feel really helps you understand the advantages of both, to include why someone would enjoy playing that particular style. The satisfaction of landing that head shot is one of the many reasons I liked sniping, the adrenaline rush you get from jumping into the fray while releasing a storm of buck shot, throwing knives or whatever is addicting and overwhelmingly satisfying when you're successful at coming out alive from a 1v3 engagement, which is what really grabbed me whenever I got used to using a shotgun. Both require skill, but different sets of skills. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both I feel makes you a better and more well rounded player. It's been quite a trip and I've only just started getting into PvP.

  • That's funny. I did the opposite, was only rushing with shottys. Then 2-3 months ago, I started sniping. It's been tough but fun, and now I'm getting pretty decent at it. Like you, I recommend changing it up from time to time.
