But there are better war films you should also check out, like Apocalypse Now, Come and See, and Full Metal Jacket. Platoon is also great.
I wouldn't say Full Metal Jacket is better than Saving Private Ryan as a war film. The only truly memorable part is during boot camp, the rest is weak in comparison.
I disagree, but many film buffs would say the same and criticize the second half as significantly weaker than the former half in boot camp. Personally, I thought the entire film was very well made and provoked, or at least attempted to and did for me, a number of feelings from its audience. The first half alone wouldn't do the entire premise of the movie itself justice, as it not only meditates on the harshness of boot camp and the mental degradation of the human spirit when undergoing such hostility, but also the mental torment experienced when confronted in a real life, unstaged operation, where physical conflict surrounds one, and how it can get to the best of even the most well trained men. Also, the entire sniper sequence is something of a critique of modern Hollywood films and their pro-war themes and messages, and is probably the most memorable series of events in the film for me, especially when Joker confronts the enemy sniper and kills her. Ultimately, what separates this film with others might very well be its first half, but the second half is what gives the film its context, gives it purpose, and ultimately what brings it full circle.
You know I was gonna say you are wrong but after you detailed you're feelings on it I must say I can understand and respect you're opinion. While I do believe the Boot camp part was the only good part I do think that they were truly going for a depressing feeling on the second half seeing as it was a lost/unpopular war. Saving Private Ryan is also sad (I tear up everytime I watch the ending) but I do think that SPR and FMJ go for different feelings (if that makes any sense.) I will say I like SPR better tho.
