Why is it the player character is so bad at handling any weapon besides a rapier?
You don't lay a two-handed sword on your shoulder.
You telegraph your strikes.
You turn your back towards your enemy.
Good thing they're undead because if any enemy had sense, they'd just stab you in the face as soon as you reeled back to take a swing with a long sword.
At least they character holds a two handed sword properly in Skyrim..
Edit: To all those stating its fiction/ a video game, I couldn't tell. I thought that this shit was a historically accurate retelling of the development on mankind. It never occurred to me I was being overly pessimistic for the sake of being overly pessimistic.

The same reason that I'm able to carry Smough's hammer in one hand. IDK.

Your guy literally crawled out of a tomb. He probably doesn't really know how to handle a sword properly.

It's a video game first and foremost and one set in a fantasy world. It can't get too realistic or is loses its charm. As for combat your enemies don't care about telegraphing your moves. The telegraphing is for other players so they know when to dodge or counter. If it was realistic really good players would devastate others in pvp. As for holding the great sword on your shoulder, that was a method of carrying a sword without a sheath for extended marches back in medieval times or crusading times. The swords are very heavy to carry outright. Most times they would let a wagon transport it but if the caravan was attacked the knight would be without weapon so shoulder carrying became a way to prevent that situation.

Skyrim is complete shit compared to Dark Souls. The combat is so terrible. What's there to worry about other than spamming the attack button?
You don't lay a two-handed sword on your shoulder.
You also don't use a sword that's literally one and a half times the size of your body, I.e Fume Knight Greatsword, but we do it anyway because it's fiction and it's fantasy and I don't stress over the realism of digital games.

Tis fiction mate, souls games aren't aiming for any kind of realism, although my HEMA instructor says the player character wields swords like a novice, someone with out formal training. Another thing the animations are designed this way with PvP in mind. That way players can react to in coming sword strikes from other players

I think it's goofier how magically powerful the almighty dodge roll is in this game. What you're complaining about could be explained away by lack of training/experience on your character's part.

It's a video game.

Have you seen them hold Smough's hammer? Your lucky your character can even hold it let alone use it. Also the enemies do attack when you're starting your swing.

Dude, it's a video game. Who cares
