These days it's apparently all snipers. I've tried using my shotguns, as I did in year 1, but they just doesn't seem to work anymore

Same dude. I can't use shotguns. They are my arch nemesis. But I do hardcore sniping and I use my Telesto a ton.

I used to be that guy who blink-shotgun all the time, but now they did something to the shotguns it seems, so snipers it is. Which I fun too. I just use some of my Osiris gear from year 1, and patience and time, I still don't have any of the new exotics, I just came back to destiny :D
