Oh, yes - though unfortunately you may have to jump through some hoops if you haven't already set up your system to pull definition databases. If you haven't done so already, check out these (again, awesome community-driven) instructions on how to get and keep your definition databases up to date: http://destinydevs.github.io/BungieNetPlatform/docs/Manifest Once you have those databases somewhere that you can query them, you can query the "ItemCategories" database: it will contain every possible category that the system supports, and you can use that not only to drive your queries to our system but also to drive your UI with pre-localized content!
