How long does one have to wait at a red light for it to be acceptable to run the red?
I was at a red for 10 minutes today that went through multiple cycles for the other road. I got fed up and ended up just turning around and going to a different light. Partly because I was in a company vehicle, partly because it was at a very busy road with a 60mph speed limit. Two Big Rigs did end up just running the red and making a left.
So, when does it become acceptable to run the red?

Never, it is illegal.

When you see a red light

If your are in a light car or motorcycle or something buy some strong neodymium magnets and put the near the bottom of the bike to trigger the sensors. The things just a giant metal detector and magnets interrupt it's field registering as a larger vehicle.

Maybe when a fire truck or some shit needs to get through?#

1 Replyif the red light is broken or no other cars are around; you treat the red light as a 4 way stop sign intersection.
-
No, you put other people in danger
-
1 ReplyThere are lights that detect cars and can miss motorbikes, I'll just go through these when it's safe.

1 ReplyI've never sat at a red light that took longer than two minutes. That said if I see a light turn yellow and I'm at least 300 feet from the light, I'll run it.

whenever you decide life isn't fast enough

Whenever you decide running a red light is more important than the possibility of receiving a several hundred dollar ticket for running the red light.

Don't, it's not legal to run a red light other than maybe in case of emergency. Still not good because you have no lights or sirens to warn on coming traffic and can make things much worse. Here's a few tips though to avoid or resolve that situation. Most light detectors are based on magnetic fields that won't be tripped by some vehicles, motorcycles know this issue most of all. To trip the signal, look for a square cut out and place your tire right on the line. If you have a motorcycle or small car, stick a strong magnet to your frame. Rock your car back and forth a bit, this helps with less common light based signals too. Worse case scenario, walk your bike through the cross walk, or get out and hit the walk button. Or you know, just turn right and flip a bitch a block down the road.

When your in hot pursuit or going to an emergency in a police car fire engine or ambulance . Also it has to be safe to do so or the driver is liable.

5 RepliesOnly for the 1-2 secs after it turns red as in the uk (you must stop at a red light! So long as it's safe to do so!) "no officer I didn't feel I could stop safely without being hit from behind" ;)
