Campus Carry (Firearms). What is your opinion?

I carry on campus (or will when legal this year).

59

I would carry, but it is not legal in my state this year.

48

I won't carry, but am okay with it.

129

I won't carry and think it is wrong.

214

I won't carry and will move to another school.

9

I am too young now, but will carry when legal.

I am too young now, but will not carry when legal.

Because of recent state legislation and court rulings, eight states now have provisions allowing the carrying of concealed weapons on public postsecondary campuses. These states are Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. I have searched for criminal events involving on campus carry, where on campus carry is legal. I have found none. My search was online and not exhaustive. I have found plenty of predictions of the catastrophic effects that campus carry would cause. These predicted catastrophes have failed to materialize. Yea! Once you vote, please take the time to post an explanation of your choice. If none of the choices fit your opinion, please explain it. Sorry, b.net only gives us 7. I can only speak specifically about Texas. If you have a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) or License to Carry (LTC), you have been able to carry on campus, but not in buildings, at 2 and 4 year post secondary schools since September 2013 (maybe 2011). You can only carry concealed, even after open carry became legal on 1 January 2016. After 1 August 2016 (1 August 2017 for 2 year colleges), CHL and LTC holders will be able to carry concealed in most buildings. Private colleges can opt out, and public colleges can prohibit access to some locations. Except for about 260 eighteen to twenty year olds statewide (not necessarily enrollee), all Texas CHL and LTC holders are twenty one or older.

  • If you're licensed to carry that means that you are considered competent by the state to be allowed to carry a firearm. If you're an Adult, and you have been determined to be a safe individual to carry a firearm, I see absolutely no reason to bar them from carrying on a college campus.

          • I would carry if legal. I concealed carry when im in my home state because i feel as though it is possible that at any time i could be present for a vicious crime. I dont wanna be with the rest of the people helpless and defenseless if anything should ever happen. Its not that i want a crime to happen or want to shoot somebody, im just facing the reality thay sometimes you get 1/4 mile off campus and someone in a stolen car tries to carjack you (happened at my college recently). I carry, and would carry at college, because i am a responsible, educated adult who recognizes that i live in a world where stuff happens. I feel a responsibility to the people around me to be able to defend myself and them. I am not paranoid or fanatical, i value human life above all other things and i believe that i am safer with my gun than i am without it and so are the people around me. Btw i am trained and proficient with my firearm.

            • People are looking at this the wrong way. The problem isn't people being irresponsible. It's that people will judge people who are carrying as weird and being freaks (not my opinion it's just the way it is).

                        • I think maybe you should be able to own one if you live in a dorm or something like that on campus, but for defense reasons. But that said, YOU SHOUKD NEVER CARRY A GUN ANYWHERE NEAR ANY SCHOOL. Therefore, no concealed or open carry on campus. I say maybe you should have a gun because there are quite a few campuses (like some of Georgia Tech's dorms) that are literally across the street from ghetto neighborhoods.

                                  • A) holy -blam!- too many poll options. B) good. Let's turn 8 into 50. Your right to self defense doesn't magically end when you go to class. We aren't talking about children, we are talking about licensed adults. Concealed carry permit holders commit shockingly few crimes and it is extremely stupid and dangerous to think "no guns allowed" signs will stop criminals. Particularly mass shooters, who are usually suicidal anyway. (Wouldn't care about jail)
