Sterling Treasure Concerns Me - Your Feedback Requested

Whats up DTS clan mates! So, Sterling Treasure… 3 ways to acquire it each week, One a week from the post master for logging in One from Lord Shaxx by completing a daily crucible featured playlist (on a weekly lockout) One from Variks (don’t think they said exactly how, probably completing a challenge of elders run) So in total you can EARN 3 Sterling Treasure a week. If you have 3 characters you may be able to do this on each one, I am not sure yet though as Bungie hasn’t announced the finer details of the system. oh wait, there is a 4th way to get Sterling Treasure. By buying them through Eververse (200 Silver) Inside the Sterling Treasure you have a chance to get a piece of Spektar armor, Desolute Armor, 3 new ships (one’s emblem was blanked out), and 1 of the 4 available chromas. Oh yes, and of course > Vanguard Reputation Boost, Crucible Reputation Boost, House of Judgement Reputation Boost Lets start with the positives, I think the weekly login reward of 1 sterling treasure is awesome, and a fantastic idea. Also the ability to see what is possible to drop within the sterling treasure is a good idea as well. Here is what worries me. This is the first time players can essentially buy armor and boosts. The armor looks fantastic and is something I am going to work hard to collect (big reason to have 3 characters to be honest). BUT the fact you can purchase these sterling packs from eververse concerns me, the boosts especially. The Rep boosts will only be available in the Sterling Treasure packs, and can theoretically be seen as a pathway to buying power. Example: Streamer buys 15 sterling packs with that Twitch Money > Gets a bunch of Rep Boosts > In turn receives many more faction packages and gets plenty of new faction gear with high light. Alongside that, the player who buys many of these packages will have a much higher chance of completing their Spektar and Desolute Armor sets before the player who doesn’t spend money. To me this lessens the accomplishment of finishing a Spektar or Desolute set. I am someone who firmly doesn’t want to support a microtransaction that contains Rep boosters. I may feel differently if there was a way in game to purchase the boosts with in game currency (ie strange coins, or motes, or marks). But I can’t view this without thinking about the slippery slope argument. In an ideal world, I would have made the rep boosts exist outside of the Sterling Treasure. They could be purchased only with in game currency earned by the player (motes, marks, coins, whatever). There is the benefit that come April 12 they are increasing Rep gains from activities across the board (our complaints have been heard ^_^) which is awesome. But as it stands now, come April 12, you will have streamers & yt’ers buying plenty of sterling treasure for the boosts > activating the boost > then trading in a TON of heavy synths for easy Rep/Packages. You’ll see fully geared Faction sets within the first hour of the update. I’m just curious, what are your thoughts on this? How would you have handled the boosts, or Sterling Treasure in general? Am I alone in my concerns about this philosophy moving forward?

  • I just hate the fact the it keeps giving me the same consecutive gear pieces and no desolate pieces whatsoever just spektar helmets.. Kind of annoying.

  • I mean nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything. You can get packages by completing the previously listed activities. I see where you come from in the fact that rep packs would make them kind of a pay to win situation. But the thing about it is that it isn't game breaking. All the gear you get from the sterling boxes are vanity and come In at 3 light. Anything you get from a package from crucible or vanguard has a possibility to get anything that has perks of decent or higher quality. Nothing is guaranteed though.

  • Thank you for this post. I enjoy playing Destiny. Why can't I just be charged a reasonable price, with good profit, when then game is released and then a monthly subscription fee? Why is so much trickery and subterfuge necessary?

  • I think payed for sterling boxes should not include reputation boosts but anything else. Then that would be fine to me.

  • Okay 1. Eververse is likely not fully controlled by Bungie. The whole thing smacks of Activision contracting and monetization. Bungie likely had to agree to this when they couldnt make good on their original contract of 2 DLCs a year. I further speculate that this contract failure led to CEO change and the renegotiation of the contract caused the total silence of Bungie because of the legal issues. 2. Activision is using the boiling frog approach to slowly lure us into accepting pay to win. Their formula is playing out in their other titles. Suit/stock holders stick with what they see as sure money makers / career advancement. They care not what it does to the game and they tied Bungies hands with contracting. Play along or lose the IP rights. 3. The gamer has very few options. Dont support EV and Destiny may fold up shop. Support it and you encourage more stupid stuff at EV. Either way we lose and Activision Suits know this. 4. Arrrrrrrrghhhhhh. This is all happening because games are UNDER priced. Games are still priced the same as 1980 but production costs have sky rocketed. Until the gaming community will accept $100 + games they will have to play the nickel and dime game. Well i suppose a subscription model would work as well.

    • I'd have a much bigger problem with the Stirling Treasure boxes if the gear inside dropped at a high light level. But it doesn't. It drops at 3 light. You could buy 10, 20, hell 100 of these things and all your gear inside will be 3 light. Unless you've got gear to infuse them with, they're worthless. As for regular rank-ups with factions for high-level gear, I'm afraid I disagree on that too. While you're not wrong that you'd rank up far more regularly, the gear dropped would still likely be between the 270-295 light level mark. Might just be me, but I don't consider that "high-level". I am, however, very wary on Bungie's moves here concerning Eververse. There's a much, much bigger focus on Tess and her wares than ever before, and I don't like it. It seems to me that they're testing the waters to see what they can get away with.

      • They've crossed the line with Stirling treasure box purchased. It's not because it's pay to win. Which I'll just stay out of that debate because it overshadows the real issue. This is pay to lube. What does pay to lube mean? I'm glad you asked. Games such as destiny, and other loot based grind games, have what's called friction. What is friction? Great question. Friction is when a player is met with and obstacle that prevents them from advancing, but only for a short period of time. What's destiny's friction? The OP hones in on it immediately. It's the 3 times per week players can gain access to the RNG lever pull, aka Stirling treasure box. The friction is the inability to gain access to the box after you've used up your chances, until Tuesday reset. This isn't new, this has been how destiny has throttled it's progression and extended it's grind. VoG, CE, Poe, KF, weeklies, daily, and nightfalls all use the friction approach. Players have complained that RNG is too strict since vanilla. It's the reason the treasure cave was so popular at first. Now that we can pay to lube the friction expect more friction and more paid for lube. It's free2play mobile gaming 101.

        • Finally some one else gets it. I've been posting about this for weeks. It's not about the nerfs, or the weapon sandbox wreckage that we all know is coming but this thing right here is the one that will wreck the game. If the sterling treasure is still sold then I'll stay away from Destiny. Yes, I'm a die hard fanboy or whatever but I'm not stupid or naive enough to stirred like a horse. I'll keep bumping this thread till they take that shitty idea out.

It also mean more armor materials, more weapons parts, more motes of light, more glimmer and more marks. Now the player has paid for more material. They can use more marks to buy more Legendary Engrams and although it would be rare, could get more exotics based on being able to buy more Legendary Engrams. I don't care if the increase is a small percentage. It is am advantage based on personal financial gain. I didn't realize I already commented. It just goes to show how much I hate this. I have yet to play since Wednesday because of it. I really don't know if I will return. I am pretty quick to dismiss when we see absolutely no response by the people causing something of this Nature.

        • So, I can pay money to play less in order to acquire the same items I can acquire myself by playing more without paying? I don't see how this is concerning. Somebody needs to tell Activision this is not a cheesy mobile farmville game or an arcade game(SRL). Focus on what matters. This is taking away utilization in exchange for money. Eververse would serve us better if it was just a materials exchange vendor. For example, trading in raid materials or old HoW materials for something of value.

Bungie doesn't control Eververse. If Bungie had control they would keep it at emotes and sparrows and other cosmetic things. (Ships, emblems, shaders) Activision is in control of Eververse and Bungie can't do anything about it.

          • If they were to get rid of the Rep/xp boost, I would have no problem with it. The fact you can buy something that can give an XP boost of some kind is unacceptable. With having these booster in a purchasable item, it gives the potential for players with more money to open more faction packages, get better rolls, and dismantle items for more materials such as weapon parts and Marks. This is not ok.

            • 1) Boosts shouldn't really concern veteran players as most have crucible/vanguard rank 10+ 2) The armour only drops at 3 defence so you're not really getting any sort of advantage, it just looks cool. 3) I appreciate the fact that they may be going further with microtransactions than first thought, but you can still get sterling silver from other places.

                • It seems like this is heading to a pay to win situation but what most people don't realize is there really isn't any pay to win at all. A real pay to win situation would be getting armor so that noyhing could hurt you and weapons that could kill everything with one hit. Someone could buy a doctrine with a 500 round mag and still not be good in crucible at all. So until an unstoppable setup is released that you can buy there is no pay to win. If you don't like that people can buy sterling treasure to get stuff earlier than people who don't buy it. Then the solution is don't buy just grind for it increase the amount of time you have with the dlc

                  • The April update is funded by micro-transactions. Destiny is effectively a free-to-play game like Warframe until the next paid expansion. So free-loaders like me will look like second class citizens until the next paid DLC makes everything's obsolete again.

                  • I'm still undecided about all of this. What I do know is that Bungie will continue to explore revenue streams so that they know what they can get away with in Destiny 2. I'll speak by keeping my wallet closed.

                    • I'm kinda torn on the issue. On one hand, it doesn't bother me at all if someone buys 1 Sterling Treasure or 100.. or 1000. Knock yourself out. I've played this game enough to know that RNG can be a pain. I'm not going to gamble my hard earned money on purchasing any Sterling Treasure packs. I agree with Dragoon though, the reputation boosts are the one item in the loot pool that bothers me.
