I've never played the games and I'm debating on getting it when it releases. I've watched gameplay footage on YouTube, but it doesn't really do anything for me as the opinions are typically biased.
Could you provide me an unbiased opinion from experience of the Dark Souls games? What is it like? Is it a grind? Fast paced, slow?
Do I have to play Dark Souls 1 and 2 to understand 3?
Thanks

You can't compare the Souls series to any other game!

Alright, I think the hundreds of comments are enough for him to realize what he's getting into.
It's hard.
There, I said what the other hundred of people said.

1 ReplyThe DLC for Dark Souls 1 is called "Prepare to Die" Draw conclusions from there...

Hell.

As a huge fan of the series, I can safely say that the games take a whole hell of a lot of getting used to. The reason everyone considers it to be such a difficult series is because the initial learning curve is really damn steep. The pace of the games is fairly slow (aside from Bloodborne, which feels built around being a hyper fast version of Dark Souls), and it harshly punishes you for being too aggressive. I'd be willing to bet that most people don't fully get around the curve until about half way through the first game after beating a certain boss fight (if you've beaten DS 1, you know exactly who I'm talking about). It's a slow, sometimes frustrating process, but personally, I think that figuring out just what the hell you're supposed to be doing is overall a fantastic experience and well worth the time and effort. If you don't think you'd enjoy that, however, I'd say to avoid the games. They certainly aren't for everyone.

Shove a ghost pepper up your ass. That's a pretty good way to feel what it's like to play Dark Souls.

Best way to describe. Walking on hot coals, mixed with shards of glass, burning with rubbing alcohol.

3 RepliesYou will die. Play 1 because it is the original.

Dark souls: roll roll roll

The combat can be fast or slow paced depending on your timing it has a very steep learning curve and is vey punishing however it's rewarding beating a challenging part of the game now as for story you technically won't have to play the first 2 to understand what's happening in the 3rd but it will help you pick up on lots of little bits of lore I do recommend playing them both though because they are good games hope it helps

If you're a masochist, you'll do just fine.

I'm not a fan of the series. I gave up on the first game pretty quickly my first time playing it, however on my second, vastly more successful attempt, i'd say I got relatively far into the game. It can be fun, but I found it got extremely boring very quickly. I don't know if that's just because I need to "git gud" or because the game was lacking a motivator by the time I got down into Lost Izalith. Sure, I had the objective of gathering the four great souls from the far-flung corners of the game, but I had accomplished most of what I had wanted to do at that point so I stopped. This is an incomplete playthrough in all it's glory, so if you think that makes my opinion invalid, good for you. I'm posting it anyway. Good game at times, got boring fast, wouldn't really recommend the series in general.

In a word...
Magnificent
Perfect example of Dark Souls

These guys are idiots. Just play the first one, if you don't like it, then keep playing.

It's an rpg that can get really hard and with a hidden story.

18 RepliesWalk 10 feet... die. Walk 10 more feet... die again. Walk 20 feet... die. Walk the same 20 feet, dodge 8 times and attack... die. Rinse and repeat until you can't take it anymore or until you beat the game... die again.

Dark Souls is like that one girl you really really like. You go out on multiple dates but it never leads to anything. You make out and fool around long enough to get blue balls but you refuse give up. So you keep trying. Eventually after months and months of blue balls you either get lucky enough for an french handshake or you give up and go sleep with the other girl down the street.

1 ReplyBrutal. Painful. Excruciating. Would rather have shards of glass up my ass. Equal to getting mule kicked in the taint.

You don't win, you just do a little better each time.

It's definitely a game with quite the challenge. For the most part It will both not hold your hand and not tell you where you are going. It's a very dark game with a lot of lore and a lot of dying. If you get easily discouraged or tend to rage a lot I probably wouldn't suggest it. Mostly it's good for patient players that don't get aggravated too quickly.

1 ReplyLike being -blam!- in the ass by a donkey and booted in the face by a horse whole being spat on by a camel at the same time. It's very enjoyable

If you have a xb1 I think the original is backwards compatible. Get that as it'll prob be cheaper and a better game than 3. Be prepared though it demands time, skill, and a solid awareness of enemy move sets. A really rewarding game.
