If a black hole of the same mass as Sun replaced Sun, Earth's orbit would be entirely unaffected. Black holes are horrible eaters, anything they "consume" has pretty much fallen into them. Imagine spacetime as sand, and mass is a hole digger. This hole does not grow in diameter as long as the mass remains the same, however, the more dense the mass is, the deeper the hole goes. A black hole is basically what happens when the hole gets too deep. Anyone on the beach is pretty much safe, until they fall in the hole. Don't fall into the hole, you will not come back, and the fact that you don't come back is actually a big problem in modern physics, thanks Hawking. So to answer your question, a black hole could form anywhere it likes on Earth and it wouldn't matter to me much, as Earth has very little mass, and so for a black hole to appear on Earth, it would have to have a fraction of the mass that Earth does, and thus would bleep out of existence very quickly, thanks Hawking. Well then what about where Sun is? Well, since Sun physically couldn't just disappear, and the medium of space isn't empty, the black hole would form a sphere of accretion around it, exciting gasses, so we wouldn't go completely dark. If this accretion allotted enough energy to Earth, we would be absolutely fine. The only problem is Sun's magnetic field would be gone, however, it is possible for the accretion to generate a magnetic field (this was actually proven recently!), and considering that Sun's is only about 1 gauss, it wouldn't be the hardest thing to achieve. So I mean, sorry about nerding up your thread and shit, but a black hole is the least of our worries when it comes to space. GRB's and magnetars are funner ways to kill us.
