So I saw some posts about the meaning behind names of weapons... I thought I'd give 1000 yard stare a theory behind its name:
First off, before we start. We all know that 1kstare is a very good sniper to use in crucible, let's get that aside as it will be helpful in the theory.
There is a movie (lots of spoilers ahead, read at own risk, some of you may not have seen it) that came out in January of 2015 called American sniper. In this movie (based off a true story) an American sniper named Chris Kyle was sniping terrorists, ensuring safer travel for his team.
Anyways, throughout the movie there is a terrorist sniper who can hit his shot from over a mile away (or, 1000+ yards out)
at the end of the movie, Chris Kyle finally kills this sniper at over 1000 yards away
Point being, I think this sniper named 1000 yard stare because I'm the movie (and the book) chris Kyle was constantly staring down his sights, and he hit a legendary shot that was 1000 yards away.
Edit: after seeing the comments- my theory seems to be wrong- I never knew there was an actual term for being in too much combat then getting flashbacks of it all (this term being 1000 yard stare)
Thank you to those who respectfully corrected me, I appreciate it.

14 RepliesAfter the horrors of war many soldiers will often stare blankly into the distance, flashing back to what they saw and did in that time. That look is called a 1000 yard stare, and is a sign of never being the same after such monstrosities they were a part of. It is a much older reference than some movie from last year.

2 Repliesrofl....too funny. Did you think the saying "saved by the bell" came from the tv show too? People used to pass out and Dr's/Corners would accidentally pronounce them dead so bells were attached to tombstones with a string or wire tied off to the body at the other end in case they awoke! And what if they woke up at night you say? Enter the term "Graveyard Shift" was born for the people to listen for the bells during midnight hours......

1 ReplyNo "A thousand yard stare" is when someone zones out like when you're in a coffee shop looking at the wall but you're stoned thinking about conspiracies.

6 Replies"Thousand Yard Stare" is a military term used to describe a gaze that soldiers who have returned from war sometimes portray. It is basically a stare off into the distance. It is usually a sign of a flashback or flashbacks. I've seen this stare many times. It's like the person is physically there, but their mind is elsewhere.

Not correct, but a good theory

1 ReplyThe phrase has been around before Chris Kyle, badass that he was, was a twinkle in his dads nutsack.
-
6 RepliesNo, idiot. 1000 yard stare is a look ,in the eyes of soldiers after too much combat. Not because of some so so sniper.

You must be REALLY young.

Oh to be young again

You must be very young.

Thousand yard state is a phrase that's been around for a long time. I would hope Bungie would have more integrity than to name it after a war porn movie.

The 1000 yard stare is from the look that people get in their eyes (like staring off into the distance, etc) that sometimes happens after that person experiences some type of trauma

2 RepliesEdited by DoobieWan_Kenobi: 3/21/2016 5:34:51 PMRestraining order = 100-1000 yards Sniper - 1000 yard stare Quite brilliant. Moser hit the nail on the head.

It actually dates back before the Korean War

Edited by DaJuan Hoonoks: 3/21/2016 5:19:21 PM1000 yard sniper shot is kind of like bowling a 300 game or pitching a perfect game in baseball. It's the benchmark for studs. But what Moser said below is true.
