  • Honestly from the grimoire it sounds like the Traveler was a coward who only interacted with species to try and get them to defend it from the darkness. One card even said the traveler had vanished and suddenly reappeared to get it's butt kicked defending earth. I don't think it's good or bad, i think it was scared crapless and finally had enough and fought back. This unintentionally saved what was left of humanity and the ghosts are really just trying to get it back online or awaken it so it can haul ass away again.

If the story line and lore was that important they would have put more in the game from the start. The story I have come to understand is titled, "Welcome to a Space Grind". "The Traveler" and "The Stranger" are as ambiguous as Bungee's press releases on the future of a dead game.

  • So basically the traveler is future apocalyptic hitler... I believe it

  • I agree with the last poster; the Light is life and prosperity, and its rival, the Darkness, is nothing but death. Look at Oryx, he could communicate and use the power of the Darkness, but to do so he slaughtered and committed genocide to hundreds of species. The Darkness is cruel and unforgiving.

  • Ugh. Most of these ideas are terrible and are born out of player desperation for some kind of "twist." The Darkness. Is. Evil. The Light. Is. Good. It really is that simple. The Traveller may have an inscrutable purpose, and it may act out of self preservation, but the Darkness hunts it, no matter what. The Hive eradicated hundreds, if not thousands of species, whether they had been visited by the Traveller or not. The only reason Humanity survived their encounter with the Hive is due to the Traveller, and the Hive would've found us eventually. Splitting the player base into legitimate factions is a bad idea in a cooperative PvE game. Also, both Shaxx and Saladin wear their helmets at all times. By the author's logic, they can't be trusted, either. And the grimoire card for Osiris is written from the perspective of the Speaker, who clearly regrets exiling Osiris and wishes that he would return.

    • Lame. Sounds like a mid 2000s M. Night Shamalan movie. So predictable and not interesting. "The good guys are actually bad" So played out. The hive are agents of the darkness, and have ended thousands of civilizations on their way to earth. That's bad as far as human rationale is concerned. The fallen are upset that the traveler left them and we stand in the way (bad) The cabal offer an interesting middle ground, since they're just running from the darkness, but they over took Mars and killed everyone they could (bad) The traveler chose to stay and fight (good) Helped us terraform our system (good) Enabled human lifespan to triple (good) Let's worry about making the motives of the bad guys more interesting, rather than forcing an obvious, phoned in plot twist down our throats. Let's keep Crota Woman on our side.

    • I always love these theories, this is definitely one of the better ones I like how he provides multiple specific examples of how the story relates to Greek mythology and what that could imply about future events.

    • I like a good mystery. Its a shame this "story line" is lost in grimoire and not revealed in the game. There were plenty of opportunities to reveal plot twists and unknowns while playing the game. Bungie should have strung us along with more story, even if it left us with more questions. Maybe Destiny 2 will let us make choices like Mass Effect did. Wait and see...

    • A nice read, all fictional and nothing confirmed. However it was a nice read nonetheless. I have here an older video from game theory about Destiny's lost plot. I thought it might be relevent, again nothing confirmed, but intresting still.

        • The traveller prob took the darknesses egg and turned it into a shush stick. I can't shake the resemblance of the Booves round ship and Oryx and Crotas likeness to the Gorg.

        • I really enjoyed that article. I know I'm probably getting bashed for my opinion but so far I have enjoyed Destinys story. Ok it could have been told and implemented a bit better, no doubt... But I have seen great advancements in TTK. I do like a bit of mystery and prefer if not everything is payed out for me directly. I'm having similar thoughts like author, always wondering what could happen next. Why are we introduced to this character? And to be honest I love that there is so many possible side stories that may or may not come into the game.

Makes sense. It's no coincidence that Destiny is influenced by Greek mythology. One of the first games Bungie made back in the early 1990s was called "Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete". Seems they're keen students of that stuff.

            • That is a really cool article. It would be great if any fraction of what he laid out made it into year 2. It also makes perfect sense. The most interesting part was the split of the vanguard between those dedicated to the light and those to the dark. Though I doubt that it would part of year 2. With the players so starved for content you might see the Vanguard in its entirety go to the dark side. Then again given proper motivation it might not be beyond reason that some may chose to remain with the light. Again this is the most intriguing part of the article.
