Practice shooting(if you have a gun), workout, especially in the endurance category, and get plenty of sleep.

I have a handgun, I could go to a shooting range. I expected rifles to be the main focus, will handguns play a very large role?

Not sure, never been to the army, but I guess to a small extent.
