Strike boss design: revamping Taniks the Scarred
DISCLAIMER! I have NO PROBLEMS with the Shadow Thief strike, it is my favourite strike and Taniks is my favourite boss. The only reason I am doing this is that my creative nature got the better of me.
The Shadow Thief is my favourite strike ever. I think the main reason why that is is because it reminds me so much of the first part of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Taniks the Scarred IS General Greivous. If you read the lore on Taniks, he is an enhanced cyborg with the use of prosthetics and has killed many Guardians, notably the old Hunter Vanguard, Andal Brask. This is nearly identical to Grievous, who also was a Cyborg with prosthetics, and has killed many master jedi. Plus they both have four arms, if that means anything. Here is where I feel Taniks the Scarred was shafted in terms of design. He does not use any sort of prosthetic weapons grafted to his arms or any cybernetic enhancements. He holds a Scorch Cannon (which is awesome) but he holds it. He is honestly just Aksor the Archon Priest with a different weapon. This is the idea part of the post. In House of Wolves, Bungie introduced three new types of Shanks: Tracer Shanks, Repeater Shanks, and Exploder Shanks. while not that hard to kill, they were a fresh change compared to regular Shanks, and actually proved a fraction more difficult. Why not have Taniks highlight a few of these additions with prosthetic weapons? This is what I propose; • Repeater Shank Gauntlet: at certain times when enemies are closer, but not in melee range, Taniks will try and "spray & pray" with a repeater gun. • Tracer Shank Turret: a shoulder mounted turret, it has a slower charge up time then a wire rifle (same damage however) and can be used in tandem with his other weapons to fire at other targets. • Exploder Shank Grenades: Taniks will stop firing his Scorch Cannon at you when you are behind cover, and will instead try and flush you out with Shock Grenades, similar to how Dregs throw them, but more powerful, and multiple of them. • Shock Blades Melee: replace the standard ground pound melee of regular bosses with Taniks savagely swinging two Shock Blades when you get in too close. (he will hold these with his lesser arms.) BALANCING Now before you get out your pitchforks, I understand that this sounds impossible to beat. What you have to understand is that Bosses cannot pull off multiple attacks at the same time. Valus Ta'aurc has to stop firing his to gun to either launch his rockets or ground pound, Sepiks Prime has to stop blasting to vacuum you up. Here is how it will be balanced. • Taniks will teleport a fraction less than normal, to compensate for his versatility. • Since the Tracer Turret has a slower charge time than a normal wire rifle, but still deals the same damage, it is allowed to be used in tandem with his other weapons, but will only target you if you are at a farther range. • he will only use the Repeater Gauntlet if you are close to him, but not close enough for him to melee. • he will only throw the Shock Grenades when you are behind cover. • Melee will only happen when you are in range, no change there.
So that's all I've got. I understand that I will get some MAJOR flak from the community for this, and a lot of negative feedback. All I can hope is that you guys read the Disclaimer. I will only respond to positive feedback and constructive criticism, anything that is just hate mail will be ignored, I hope you all will understand.
Edit: so it seems the only thing people have a problem with is me referencing the Star Wars prequel movies. :) My Portfolio: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/147136494/0/0

 • I just did this strike in the Heroic rotation, and it looks like one of the good people at Bungie has tweaked the end boss fight a little. I had gotten used to Taniks spawning on the raised center platform in the final room and then retreating to the rear left corner. This time he chased one of us around the room and wasn't as easy to kill. Interesting,
