In a world with Hitscan Weapons, why exactly is damage referee needed?

I have this one issue with damage referee and understanding it's raison d'être. Since we have hitscan weapons and I assume melees/abilities as well, what's the point of damage referee? As long as I hit the enemy on my screen, it doesn't matter how hard the enemy lags, the damage I do should be applied, which is the reason why hitscan is used. So why introduce damage referee?

  • My understanding is that it is to combat lag that benefits them. Say you snipe them in the head, and they clearly after you got the headshot (lets say you are behind the corner) then get hit by them, and then they die. It's to prevent things like that from happening.

  • My experience with it is showing a damage reduction to everything but weapons, and/or possibly a 3-6 damage reduction per round for weapons. Grenade, melee and super damage I would almost confirm is reduced. But now with it being implemented in more playlists it is harder to get a comparison in gameplay between playlists with and without it. When it was just control there was an obvious difference in gameplay when jumping to the rift playlist. It is not fixing the problem, but does give green bars a lil edge when it works. This could also be reversed, as in the green bars get a lil more defense when against a red bar, no way to tell for sure.

  • The fact that weapons are hitscan........ doesn't make a difference . The whole point of lag is that what you see on your screen is not what they see on their screen . So you might see a guy in an objective zone, but really he is somewhere else . Shooting what you see against a lagging player doesn't matter . The point of da!age referee , as I understand it , is to make it so that whatever the player won't the better connection sees is what is decided as "real " . So if a with a good connections sees the guy won't the bad connection in the zone and and shoots him , he will take damage whether or not he is actually there . Its called damage referee because is a an adjudicator that decides which person is correct on what they see

    • First I've heard of this.... I don't read updates much.... But the lag causing damage to not be applied thing.... That happened to me earlier. On my screen I went and one shot killed someone right?.... Wrong.... It blipped and next thing I know they somehow survived my melee one shot and gave me a shotgun round to the face in under a second -_-
