So we were playing some 6v6 yesterday and the topic of Grimoire came up and after we were done playing, I got a message from a guardian that my point on the Grimoire hadn't been something they'd thought of and I thought I'd post it here to see what everyone else thinks. We actually had an amazing discussion about this for a #destinytruthcast at one point, but sadly the audio was lost before we could put it up.
We all know that the lack of story in-game has been one of Destiny's greatest weaknesses since launch. TTK was an improvement, but most of the lore is locked away on the grimoire cards that only exist outside of the game. There have been many great ideas posted by guardians on the forums on how to go about getting that lore into the game, one of which is the idea of an in-game archive that we can go to and read or hear the lore of how we ended up in The Last City, battling the Darkness and trying to save humanity.
I've always loved this idea and still think it is something that Bungie should consider for Destiny 2, particularly since we actually battled through an archive on Venus. We've heard referenced the Archive on old Aggra, wouldn't that be a perfect opportunity to built an in-game Grimoire?
However, the Grimoire doesn't completely reside outside of the game. One of the defining moments of playing Destiny for me was running the Praedyth's Ghosts mission. Anyone who ran it knows that as you collect the ghost fragments, Praedyth speaks to you through time and tells you what became of he and Kabr's fireteam. It is completely the embodiment of the Grimoire in the game itself and it is spine chilling (or at least for me) chasing his ghost through the Vault.
And it's not the first time we experienced that in the game. The first moment of true grimoire history for me was in The Dark Below as we made our way across the moon and Eris told us of her Fireteam's ill-fated journey. Every time I played that misson, it always struck a chord with me as she told how they camped in the abandoned moon base before pressing on and it gave the moon a life and real history that to this day, I always think of that when I see that base.
That's how I think the grimoire could be implemented into Destiny 2. In the story missions themselves with characters giving us the history of what happened, but also give us more exploration and put things like the ghost fragments in all the zones and missions that we can search for and unlock the history of these places we go to now just to mindlessly kill enemies as we grind for gear.
Destiny 2 should be MUCH less about going to planets just to grind and forever searching for new gear to replace what we love and much more about having awesome things to do with the gear we have and planets that we WANT to go to because they're cool as -blam!- and there's so much story, history and mystery to go back and explore.
If every mission had the depth of content (both in size of the Vault itself and the richness of story) as Paradox when running the ghosts, there is no doubt in my mind Destiny 2 could be the greatest game ever made. And the story already exists, it just needs to be put into the game for us to search out :)

What about the loading screens? Can't we utilize those more efficiently? When it's not a story mission, of course... *They can have unlocked Grimoire for the reading. *Locked Grimoire with deets on how to unlock it and/or progress bar till its unlocked. *Adverts for upcoming events - "IB coming in 12 days! Be there!" Or "New DLC arriving on X date. Visit b.net or PS Store for more deets!" *Vendor adverts - show the inventory for DO, for example. (But first they need to regularly sell things worth buying). *Adverts for the Dailies...

To go along with those archives, bungie could expand on the grimoire entries you get from killing enemies. A mix of ME, Fallout, and Destiny flair makes is all possible. After killing x number of enemies, like we do, they could drop a recording. You can walk out it to collect it, then the game gives you the option to play it then, through ghost. More scannable objects as well. I honestly don't mind games with minimal cut scenes. If a cut scene is long enough for me to check my phone during it, its too long imo. But it has to be don't right.

As much as I would love an in game way to access it, it would have to be handled properly. And I think voice overs would be perfect with the option to read it. Could you imagine how much more fun the sword quest would've been if while out collecting resources you could've been listening to Oryx read the book of sorrows? Or to hear Dredgen Yor speaking to his ghost. Oh man I love this idea! This would be perfect.

There should be 2 ghost memory voices scattered throughout the system. One talks about the worlds, and people. He's normal. One is an ok guardian, and will like this joker. He hates everything. He talks about the other races like the fallen, hive, etc. Oh, and he HAS TO have some type of addiction. Anything. Oh, and they're brothers. That hate each other. At least make the grimoire entertaining

Edited by shhh iz bananas: 2/24/2016 4:33:44 PMI like the idea of some of the ghosts picked up by the players to be in-game cinematic flashbacks. Remember ME3 when you were sent to Eden Prime and when the player interacted with the stasis pods a flashback of the Protheans fighting the Rippers was triggered? I would love to see something similar to that in D2. Regular ghosts can be stored ingame and view/listen to via the tower or in the Directory, but for major story plot lines, these ghosts would trigger the story right before your eyes in a flashback or a recording like Sols was talking about. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way to view the Traveler itself in the Directory and when you click on it, you get to view the inside of it and all the the dead ghosts you have collected from the inside? In The Division we get to fix our base of operations by doing missions and collecting resources to get those wings up and running again. In D2, I would love to see something like that involving the Traveler, fixing it ourselves by collecting resources( parts of the traveler) and by doing the story missions and all of that. If not that then maybe think of the lighthouse as a place we guardians need to fix in order to get it back to function for people to arrive there. The possibilities are endless, so I hope and pray that Bungie is really looking at some of the great ideas thrown around in this place. Make the game you guys want to make. Go all out on the sci-fi, make it the Star Wars or LOTR you guys have/had planned for this franchise. D2 needs to bring it big time, no holding back.:)

Sols, I love reading your posts. But I've officially become a firm believer that Destiny is a lost cause. They've had over a year and, in my opinion, have accomplished only two major things. Taking money and messing up weapon balance nearly beyond repair.
-
...or Bungie could make it similar to the Mass Effect series. A player opens up a journal in the menu screen and all the major events in history can be read and heard with a voice over, whilst the minor events can be read.
-
YES I absolutely love this idea and it think it would greatly improve the game. Another thing that needs to happen soon is NEW RACES OF ENEMIES. The first time I played destiny it was amazing and the first time I saw the hive I freaked out! With the taken king it just didn't have the same new feel and look.
-
You mean like anyother game that has a story with cut scenes to explain the story? Too bad they lost Joe Staten! If they scrapped the supercut and didn't listen to Joe, what makes you think they'll listen to you or somehow develop simple/basic story telling/writing skills that so many other producers have been using since donkey kong!?
-
So like warframes codex? Honestly destiny should take notes from that game.
-
Another great post. Bump They could implement the grimore during loading screens like in Fallout and Elder Scrolls, although I really like your idea and could definitely see it as a way to make the grimoire a little more accessible.
-
It would be nice to have the Grimoire cards right in the start menu
-
I'd rather they actually weave the narrative into the game play but I'm afraid that ship has sailed, so I'd settle for the kind of in game narration you're describing. I can't help but feel that this is yet another example of Destiny's full potential being lost forever for the sake of the bottom line.
-
Many people forget before launch Destiny was described (by Bungie) as wanting to be the "Star Wars" of video games based on the epic story and lore. I remember reading a few cards before launch and wandering what cool way they were going to implement them in-game. An archive, library or maybe mini missions... I never thought for second (before launch) the grimoire cards would be strictly out-of-game.

Edited by BXR Lonestar: 2/23/2016 6:01:34 PMLets add on top of that in-game lore via the speaker and other tower characters. In Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, once you gained access to the Arcane university, you could occasionally catch some of the professor mages giving different lectures (I think 6 or 8 in total). It may get old after you have heard all the lectures, but it WOULD be an avenue to leak in grimoire on occasion or keep us up to date on the happenings in the Last City. Think about it. Wouldn't it be great to go drop in and listen on the Speaker's story time to the children of the Last City to try to get some more background information on the Traveler? How about sitting in amongst a warlock debate regarding the nature and threat of the darkness? Or listening to Zavala discussing past battles to teach current guardians fireteam tactics to use in the future or to inspire the next generation of heros? Even Variks can grant some insite on Fallen history and culture in the reef! Ditto for Petra and the Awoken. These could all occur on different days, regarding different battles, and occasionally, Bungie could leak additional information through these avenues as the story progresses. Its there, IN GAME, for those who are actually interested and want to take advantage of the flow of information/lore, but it is NOT required for people to listen to all that if they choose not to seek it out.

It's too bad I never got to experience that. I probably would have had more appreciation for Destiny at the time. Sucks it took a year to get something like that right. Now I don't even care lol.
-
The daily mission where you go into the Vog. When u find the ghosts in the mission it just plays an audiolog... That is exactly how they should all be
-
I think destiny 2 is already set in stone in terms of what they are going to be able to deliver.
-
The dev resources needed to implement this will NEVER happen in destiny one. Hopefully in destiny 2
-
The book case next to the speaker should be the grimoir section.
-
Even adding more scan objects on the planets where your ghost reads Grimoire info for you. Like recordings left in Fallout of Bioshock. Mysteries to be solved. I'd also like to see more of earth and the last city. Whats up with the survivors down there. The paper cut out civilians in the Tower just make arse-kissing comments like the Guardians are elitists.
-
Bump, this, a library at the tower, and a question prompt at vendors where you can ask them questions about their pass and about the origin of the city. idk
-
Even if they just narrated grimoire cards during load screens.....just something

Am not personally sold on the idea of needing to go to any specific location in-game to read the Grimoire. That would be just as much effort (from my perspective) as heading to the website and reading it there. For Grimoire attached to specific objects or places, i think those cards should be narrated and accessible directly from the navigation screens. E.g. hovering above the Thorn would reveal a grimoire button which i could use to learn more about the history of the weapon. When these items drop for the first time, a little icon should allow me to quickly access the grimoire for what I just collected. Similarly, the director could have a grimoire button for Mars or whichever location i'm selecting. These can then be consolidated under a common library you can access from the same menu you currently see settings etc. This is not a novel idea by any means - it's the same paradigm most other games i've played use - and it works. My 2 cents
