I have no intention of ever enlisting, but my dad was drafted into the army... and then enlisted in the air force because he figured he had better survival odds. I don't know about now, but during Vietnam the army and marines were basically cannon fodder. Air force and navy had a much higher survival rate.

Pretty much the same still. The Army and Marines spend all of their time getting shot at, while the Air Force and the Navy have the nice safe jobs, with a few exceptions of course.
