Michigan, Also Known As "The Murder Mitten" Flies Under The Radar Year In, Year Out
How come Michigan isnt in the spotlight in terms of stopping violent crime that is happening in the US? If you look at Most Dangerous Cities in America list, Michigan routinely has 3 or 4 of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the US. For 2015 they have three and they are:
#3 Detroit
#7 Flint
#8 Saginaw
No other state even has 2 in the top 10. Most other years Pontiac Michigan is also in the top 10.
Violent crime is a real problem in the US. I feel the ACTUAL crime problems are pushed to the side because the debate always turns political. Im sure none of you have ever heard of Saginaw and im sure none of you ever heard of Flint until the recent water crisis. All 3 can be found off of I-75 also known as "The Murder Highway". All 3 were once booming automotive industry towns with only rust left behind when the auto industry slowed production. Welfare is abundant. School test scores are atrocious. Many of the waterways not just in Flint but in saginaw and Detroit are severely polluted due to the auto industry, which is ironic considering Michigan is surrounded by the freshest Great Lakes
Even if we could clean up just these 3 cities the US crime rate would be drastically improved.
What Do You Believe Must Be Done To Clean Up These Cities And Others Like Them Throughout The US?

This hits home for me, literally, as I live and have been raised in Michigan. I would like to point out though that Saginaw, Flint, and Detroit are all east Michigan. In West Michigan you've got towns like Grand Rapids, Traverse city, and my hometown Holland, which have all received accolades for being some of the best places in America. That's not to brag, that's simply fact, with popular vote to back that-Traverse city was voted one of the best places to retire by money magazine. So what does all this mean? Well, that's not for me to decide. Take all this as you will.

7 RepliesThis is an important issue you've put forward! Well first of all, we'd need bipartisan efforts to clean up these cities - we can't have Republicans and Democrats blocking each other from taking action, just because of their party affiliations. As for what to actually do, though, it certainly wouldn't hurt to increase funding for the police. More protection is necessary! Next, we'd need to increase education spending. It's known that the better a child does in school, the less likely they are to turn to a life of crime. Furthermore, more money would need to be allocated to social programs to help keep people away from crime, and to reduce the need to steal, kill, or sell drugs for money. Finally, drug [i]usage[/i] should be decriminalized, while drug [i]dealing[/i] would need to be severely dealt with.
