Matchmaking Update - 2/17/2016

Guardians, The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing. Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control. We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup. We have also extended Damage Referee (click and scroll down to "Out of Bounds" for context) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in Clash, Rumble, and Freelance 3v3. It is still live in Control, where it was originally deployed. As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to Control. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide. It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you! UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.

Would really love to hear something about the direction of PvE in this game. After all, I think that's why most people bought Destiny in the first place. With every successive DLC or expansion, there has been less emphasis on PvE and almost every update has catered to the PvP community. Vanillaa Destiny had new and exciting nightfalls that kicked you to orbit upon wipe and were well worth the reward as you had a fair chance of acquiring top level exotic items. It also had a fantastic raid in the Vault of Glass, as well as weekly heroic runs (where strange coins were absolutely something you wanted to farm, especially early on), and a very important gear chase through raiding. Raid weapons and armor were the most powerful in the game by a long shot. Anybody else remember rocking Found Verdict, Praedyth's Revenge, Fatebringer, Corrective Measure, Vision of Confluence for as long as we did? On top of that, vanguard strikes felt fun and had a purpose (mark farming), we had a Queen's Wrath PvE event for a week which was kinda neat. Overall, it was a good time for the PvE world, minus the assumptions that we were going to have larger worlds with "rich, cinematic storytelling" Crota's End saw a step forward, but also back. The radiant materials grind was frustrating, the raid wasn't much longer (or challenging) than doing a strike, however I'm not about to complain as we still had more than enough to do in the PvE world. Hey, even farming bounties and blades of Crota was a regular thing for me. I found myself out on patrol or firing up a story mission almost every day. House of Wolves saw even more of a step back with the introduction of the Prison of Elders, which was just a glorified horde mode that got boring after a couple weeks. I farmed it for a while, sure, but I'm a gear hound. I want those etheric lights. I want to upgrade all of my previous armor pieces. Still, it was fun to have lots to do in the PvE world, now that old content and gear was relevant again, however it doesn't excuse the lack of producing anything new and exciting, like more planets or raids similar to VoG. Key farming was a hoot, though. Bounties still had purpose. I still ran nightfalls and heroics, patrols for bounties, but by this point, doing VoG, Crota's End, and all of the strikes for the 100th+ time was getting old. The game really started to take a turn toward the PvP side with the introduction of the Trials of Osiris. And that brings us to TTK, where the PvE scene is frustrating at best, and painful boring and hopeless at worst. Chasing light levels endlessly, for months. One single raid to farm for... well it remains to be seen, but it's been a while now. No announcements of anything new on the horizon. Bounties and patrols are rendered useless with the nerf to rep gains. Heroic strikes for marks aren't very rewarding, and much more challenging than they need to be (especially in comparison to old vanguard heroics or tiger/dragon strikes, which were so quick), the Court of Oryx kept people busy for a couple weeks, farming blues and purples just so they could gear up for the raid. The 3 of coins has made Xur pretty much pointless. Engrams galore, all of which have a 0.04% chance to decrypt into something mildly useful. Kingsfall loot that either doesn't drop, or gets dismantled just as much as 265 blues. The game feels extremely unrewarding of the time you invest in it, and there isn't very much to do, either. It's Wednesday, and I'm already bored. I don't know what else to go in and do, other than queue up for another Crucible match to be either clipped with a 1k stare, or warriored with a Conspiracy Theory or Party Crasher. You guys are going to have to work really hard to reverse the trend, unless you truly want this game to become Call of Destiny. And if that's the direction it's going, we deserve to know. We deserve to hear the plan, not "that we're planning more, so stay tuned" Level with us. Give us something, man.
