12 Golden Warthog Tips to Get you your Driver's License

If you follow these easy guides, you'll become a better driver and you'll be better able to assist your team and even drive better in campaign mode! Most of these are common sense; you'll be surprised how uncommon common sense is. They are listed in order from most crucial to least, albeit they are all important. This isn't The Fast and Furious, so read this before you get a ticket. 1. Communicate with your Gunner and Watch his Shields There will be enemies all around the hog, so it's a good idea to have a mic. so you'll be able to alert your gunner. Most gunners respond to a single honk of the horn on the right trigger, so use this honk to let him know to be alert to the front of the hog. Also let him know which targets are crucial. And of course, watch for the Gunner's shields to go down and recharge, so you know when you need to flee. You can see shield strength by the intensity of the lights all around their body, with a brighter light meaning they are close to being killed. 2. Don't Drive to the Power Weapon Spawns All too many times have i seen a driver take me directly to a missile pod, rocket launcher, or spartan laser spawn. If you have time, go into Forge mode and study where all the power weapons spawn on warthog maps, so you know when and where to drive it 3. Don't Stop the Hog...Ever When you are driving a Warthog do not stop the vehicle under any circumstances. Just keep driving and let the gunner worry about the killing, even if it means you have to drive past the targets to ensure your survival. The moment you stop that hog you will become an easy target for the enemy 4. Vulture your Enemies Don't drive the hog directly up into the middle of the action. Instead, circle around the field, and let your gunner shoot inward. This way you are harder to rocket, stick, and grenade, albeit you will still be open to power drainers and lasers as always 5. Watch for Grenades If you see a grenade being thrown to the front of the hog, either take a sharp left turn away from the grenade, or hit the brake button, which is A on your controller and then reverse. This way you don't run over it and flip. You can still get stuck while you are avoiding those grenades, but if you make your getaway efficient you will be able to avoid possible doom 6. Don't Lose Control After a Jump or Flip I see drivers who give up when their hog is flipped over. If you get flipped, make sure to keep your hands on the Left Trigger, which is the power slider, and the Brake, which is A. These 2 buttons, as well as your thumbsticks will be the difference between the hog flipping and...not. If your hog ends up doing barrel rolls, as soon as it stops spinning, hit the Brake button and then hit the power slider, subsequently steering the vehicle foward and sideways until you can spin it upright. If all else fails, simply bail, and run. Don't attempt to save the hog if you guys will be getting killed. Instead, toss grenades around it to prevent the team from getting it, and to possibly score some of your own kills. 7. Know Advanced Maneuvers If your gunner is attacked from behind by multiple enemies, turning around and throwing it into reverse normally takes a good two seconds, which could mean the death of your gunner. However, there is an advanced technique that can throw your car into reverse in less than a second. When you notice you gunner is being attacked, hit the handbrake or power slider(left trigger) and turn the wheel sharply to the right. (It's inadvisable to turn to the left, as this exposes you to the assailants.) This will put your car into a controlled spin, in which you want to do a 180 degree turnaround so you are facing the assailants. Keep your handbrake held down for about three quarters of the spin, then throw it into reverse and let go of the handbrake, IN THAT ORDER. Throwing it into reverse BEFORE letting go of the handbrake allows your Warthog to smoothly transition between moving forward and reversing, with absolutely no sudden loss in momentum. Not only does this maneuver turn your Warthog around in a flash, but it also does so with minimum loss of momentum, allowing you to keep some distance between you and your opponents. NOTE: This maneuver requires a fair amount of open space to perform, and works best on flat ground. Also, practice this first in Custom Games, and experiment with the timing of the move to find what works best for you. This manuever makes use of reversing, as well as forces the enemies to attack the body of the hog, rather than just the gunner. This way his shields can recharge while he's still shooting. 8. Know What To Splatter The Warthog can splatter another hog, if you ram into them while your hog is new and your gunner is shooting at them. The hog with the most armor will always win the splatter. The Hog can also splatter a mongoose and a ghost. It CAN NOT Splatter a chopper, but you can destroy a chopper from far away before it reaches you. Beware Choppers, however, because from the side they can make the hog flip. 9. Don't Waste the Hog If you need to get a power weapon, either have a passenger travel with you in the hog to get it, or travel to it in the mongoose. It is unwise to take the warthog to the laser spawn on avalanche without a gunner--you'll just be wasting the hog and giving your team the laser. 10. Use your Radar You'll be surprised how useful this thing can be even in a vehicle. Use it to see enemies behind you, on top of you, or in caves and buildings and communicate that to your gunner. Also keep your eyes heavily peeled on the battlefield. If you see a Splazer guy up, alert your teammates to distract him, and when he charges up the shot, rush in with the hog and take him out while the gun is discharging. 11. Don't Try to fit the Hog in Corridors I know it's fun to take the hog into the base in Standoff, or in interesting places on Rat's Nest, Avalanche, etc. As much as these can ambush the enemy team, if you don't do it correctly you'll just be a sitting duck for sticks, power drainers, and boarders. This has got to be the dumbest thing i see amongst drivers, besides sitting there and honking the horn like a goose. 12. Don't Drive if you can't Drive You'll just be wasting the hog and the kills that a better driver could have lead their gunner to. If you see the hog in a bad position, move it to a safe location and get out so a better driver can get in. It's unwise to drive, as well as snipe, laser, or rocket, etc., if you haven't practiced and gained the experience first All these are tips from either here or myself. There are lots of other tips--these are just the main ones. If you want to see them all, hit the link. I hope they make you a better driver! BONUS: Warthog Controls for Dummies (default controls) A: Full Stop Brake Left Thumbstick Up: Accelerate LT Down: Deccelerate (hold for reverse) Right Thumbstick Up: Move camera down (good 2see Ariel Enemies) RT Right: Steer Right (hold to rotate camera) RT Left: Steer Left (hold to rotate camera) RT Down: Move camera up Right Trigger: Horn (stops after 3 seconds of continuity) Left Trigger: Power Slider (allows for controlled 'drifting') Right Bumper: Mount/Dismount (don't press by accident!!!) The different between the Power Slider/Handbrake and the Full Stop Brake is you cannot move the hog after you Full Stop Brake. The Full Stop will completely stop the hog from moving at any speed in less than 2 seconds. Also, the RT i used above isn't the Right Trigger or Left Trigger, i abbreviated it for space horizontal space to keep them on the same line. Savvy? [Edited on 11.17.2009 7:48 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: CTrain1007 Those are some good tips. I knew most of them but not all and that is a helpful guide for new drivers and a good review for experienced drivers (like myself) :)
Thanks =] i sent these to a few of my friends, and they say they're already driving like pros lol. Although most of is it still common sense... like the power weapon spawn one... lol. And as i've mentioned before not all of these tips are mine...alot of them are but the ones that aren't are from the link, which people should checkout. That Wikia site has alot of tips--tips for basically everything.

 • To be honest, I expected this to be a terrible thread, but I was wrong. You covered how to be effective in a Warthog like an expert. +1 The one thing I would add is this: The warthog is NOT a support vehicle or a transport vehicle. Its meant for killing. The Warthog is most effective when its running the outside area of a map controlling spawns and putting tons of players into respawn at the same time. By doing this, it frees your ground troops up to do their job which is work objectives, control power weapons and clean up. You should only use the hog to move flag carriers, ect if its absolutely necessary (which is rare). Id also add this rule: *NEVER drive through a spawn. If the other team spawns in front of you, start backing up while the gunner gets kills. Driving through to get a splatter is most likely going to get you both killed and take your hog away. Again, fantastic post OP.

 • They're not in any particular order, however, if you'd like me to arrange them from most crucial to least, please come to a consensus about which should be first and last. These are just the most important tips for the driver, although there are plenty of other tips. EDIT: i added a few more tips, and i arranged them by what i felt was most important. If you disagree, let me know and i'll consider changing it again. Enjoy! [Edited on 11.17.2009 2:21 PM PST]

 • I disagree with number 3. I have complete trust in my gunner, otherwise I won't drive with them. If I see an entire crowd of enemies, all with nothing but ARs and such, I will stop in a spot close enough for my gunner to see them, and let him fire away. The second I see a grenade or something else that could harm us, I'm gone. But until then, I wait. All the other points are great though. Nice post.

 •
Posted by: Vespera34
Posted by: TheNiddo I disagree with the first point. Practice driving the Warthog on Vahalla in Social Slayer. I don't think many people take SS seriously, it's a big area, several warthogs, and it's probably the best level to learn how to avoid missile pods/lasers. Rats Nests in SS is also usable for practice. You gotta learn how to dodge things somewhere.
Of course you could practice, but to those that aren't good at it, they shouldn't jump in and drive. I agree though, those levels are great, along with Standoff, Sandtrap, Sandbox, and Avalanche.
Ironically, that's exactly how I learned to drive. The first week or so that I had Halo 3, I downloaded the Heroic Map Pack, and then played SS, taking a Warthog whenever I could and began to figure things out. Obvious I wasn't great by the end of the week, but I figured out basic things like never stopping which some people still can't grasp. Now I can drive my friend to a running riot on Valhalla when we're both working in full sync, and he's fairly new at the game. Not even a Lieutenant yet, maybe 150 games under his belt. Honestly, SS is the best place to learn just about anything that isn't map specific. I think you should at least add a note about that somewhere.

 • I'm glad it helped you guys! The link helped me too, but alot of it is from experience as well. I used to practice on Outskirts and Metropolis in Halo 2, taking the warthog everywhere and driving it without flipping at all. It's really very fun! I wish more people could see this though--it got bumped down to page 3 so fast lol
