The way I read it, the freelance mode won't be permanent, but added to the cycle of weekly crucible specials alongside mayhem and inferno, so may only be an "issue" for one week or two weeks per month.

Yeah i missed the part where it would be rotating thanks for bringing that up. Although it still depends how often they come up, and let's say your playing with your buddy. You log in and freelance mode is up. It could get as bad as "well I guess we can't do much pvp this week." Maybe not, time will tell.
