Going on the premise that no question is a stupid question.......I have a question :)
I'm seeing guardians posting saying that during the shade part of the oryx challenge, it's useful to get a self res lock to take the slam "for the team"
Can anyone tell me what this achieves please........

They tank the slam and revive after it. It's pretty easy to aggro the shade and get him to hit you. It works well if (and it's a big if) your warlock actually gets teleported in. Last week when I did the challenge we had 1 warlock , 3 hunters, and 2 Titans. We all had jobs. 2 hunters were orb makers. One saved his tether for in the shade. (This could be shared between the hunters depending on who went in first). One Titan used his blessings bubble in the center, the other in the shade. Our warlock had the tank job. He only got to do it once based on how we went into the shade. The other times we just avoided it. It worked great when he could do it, but you can't depend on it like you would the other roles.

I call it baiting. Bait Oryx to come slam at you, so he doesn't come slamming in the middle while people are being teleported in. Don't take the death, if you don't have to, but the self rez insurance is there if needed. 👌

it's not that hard to dodge the shade. but it's sort of a safety valve because you always have that one guy that NEVER dies, but dies.

If you have some lower levels (like 307 or lower) who keep getting wasted inside the shade bubble then it can help to have a warlock take the hit and res. But only if they bait him to the outside. Taking the hit in the middle archives nothing as someone can still teleport in as he slams. But really I don't like people doing this. Nobody should be dying in the bubble whatever your light because he will only one hit you (unless you are very low light) with a perfect direct hit. Even if you get teleported as he slams providing your team are communicating he has maybe 1/10 of a second window to OHK you. Otherwise you jump and lose 95% of health and just have to stay away from thrall, or use one of the myriad of ways to get an over shield. TL;DR: this can be a useful tactic if you find someone dying in the shade a lot. But it should by no means be a default tactic or part of the generally accepted strategy to beat Oryx, challenge mode or otherwise.

1 ReplyWe call it challenging. Solar lock takes the hit away from the group, bonus if you melee the shade as you'll get the shield and can actually survive the hit. If you don't, revive and continue on.
-
They take the hit so a non warlock won't get hit.
-
So someone who can't come back doesn't get killed

Sword block baby.

7 RepliesIt's dumb.....I use my Warnock and people ask me to do that, my answer is ...no ,I can stay alive. Also it doesn't really do anything
-
2 RepliesLike others have said, they use it to bait the shade so that no one else gets killed. As long as everyone is aware of whats going on and simply staying off the ground and jumping away from the shade makes it very easy to not get killed. But hey, this is destiny and shit always happens, so if the warlock wants to take one for the team then I say go right ahead.

Solution= Don't get -blam!- by shade.🎮👍
-
Because a death at anything earlier than the third cycle almost certainly means failure.
-
Stop hunters from getting cleaved in two.
-
It guarantees that the shade doesn't kill a teammate who can't revive. That's all.
-
So your titans and hunters don't die, harder to do challenge with a bubble gone or having to use one player to go to a plate instead of ogre duty
-
If the self rez takes the slam the use their super to rejoin the fight saving everyone else from death or massive damage.
-
Usually I just keep running and jumpingti get past him. Only on one occasion have I been teleported into the shade right in front of him as he slammed and died. Usually it's avoidable. My advice is to just start off moving around before you're teleported, it will give you a better chance of maneuvering the shade.

I am smart enough to jus jump over or past it to make it swing and haven't messed up on it, people who die on the raid easily is why I stopped doing it

Edited by TeddyBundy: 2/2/2016 3:18:43 PMMaybe to minimize the reason that another one gets slammed what forces a wipe? Sometimes you're getting transported right into his slam only to die right away. It's literally the only thing a Warlock can contribute to the group in this encounter. Not too hard to understand imo...
-
I play as a warlock and bait the slam but never get killed by it. Learn to jump people.
-
If he targets the warlock and slams him he can self res and means the rest of the team won't get killed
-
It achieves keeping your titan and hunters alive... if a warlock takes the shade on they can self revive keeping your raid team alive
-
Edited by Teal'c: 2/2/2016 2:54:21 PMit's perfect and very fast to kill the shade jump away it takes longer to kill the shade and it's for the safety when anyone teleport in the bubble
-
Its uneccesary really, because you can defend with an exotic sword and take the hit and not die. But if your in a team struggling with quick dps it buys you an extra 12 seconds for the warlock to res and re teleport in
-
In think it's stupid. I would rather have you alive than dead. You might need that selfrez on for later. We finish the challenge mode with 3 titans, 1 warlock, and 2 hunters. Staying alive is the most important thing.

Doesn't achieve anything
