Rift is just like control.
Except the B point is the spark.
You said it yourself; everyone gathers in the center.

Rift is nothing like control. While the center zone is the ideal zone to maintain, I can very much win the game by controlling the other two zones and my team has also won matches controlling just one zone and slaughtering the kills. It's much more fair and balanced than Rift and requires a lot less sacrifice.
