why do people grab the spark when no one is around to help/support them? Because of the "highest score in the game" bounty?

For one. Denying the spark is equally as important as getting it.

That and once you get it, retreat to your team and move forward with support. It's not hard to lead the enemy into a firing squad, they tend to chase the spark bearer blindly.
