I was doing a bit of english homework the other night when i came across a few... let's just call them occurances. i somehow found, in my dictionary, that sangheili is a combination of two latin words.
Sang - which means blood
and
Heili - which means son
thus, we can conclude that the word "sangheili", or the covenant name for Elites, is the latin phrase meaning Blood-son.
and there you go.

well, since we get off topic, I find my duty to bring us back Tartarus is the name of the Greek underworld
Tartarus is the lowest region of the world, as far below earth as earth is from heaven. According to the Greek poet Hesiod, a bronze anvil falling from heaven would take nine days and nights to reach earth, and an object would take the same amount of time to fall from earth into Tartarus. Tartarus is described as a dank, gloomy pit, surrounded by a wall of bronze, and beyond that a three-fold layer of night. Along with Chaos, Earth, and Eros, it is one of the first entities to exist in the universe. While Hades is the main realm of the dead in Greek mythology, Tartarus also contains a number of characters. In early stories, it is primarily the prison for defeated gods; the Titans were condemned to Tartarus after losing their battle against the Olympian gods, and the hecatoncheires stood over them as guards at the bronze gates. When Zeus overcomes the monster Typhus, born from Tartarus and Gaia, he hurls it too into the same abyss. However, in later myths Tartarus becomes a place of punishment for sinners. It resembles Hell and is the opposite of Elysium, the afterlife for the blessed. When the hero Aeneas visits the underworld, he looks into Tartarus and sees the torments inflicted on characters such as the Titans, Tityos, Otus and Ephialtes, and the Lapiths. Rhadymanthus (and, in some versions, his brother Minos) judges the dead and assigns punishment.
Taken from www.pantheon.org :D

nice find, makes sense to me.

NO!! You are false PUNY INFIDEL! We Sangheili do not know this human language of "latin" that you speak of. It is merely a coincidence! Now may the forruners give you mercy...FOR I SHALL NOT!!

Sharquoi. = DRINOL BEAST = Halo 3 = awesome. If you want to see the above do a google search, or watch the lost cutscenes in the DVD.-hint- Prophets/Arbiter/Tablets/picture of the covies pecking order. Hopefully the engineers will be in H3, as well as other Spartans. Forerunners are pretty much a lock for H3, it'll probably feature a cutscene w/ them. All of the old weapons need to return for the campaign for various reasons, & I'll stop typing now.....-Peace

Well the point of this post was that the word sangheili can be the combination of 2 latin words. We/he knows its the name of the Elites, but maybe who ever came up with the name did it by translating bloodson to latin.
-
what do the other names mean then? and if you were doing english homework why are they latin words?
-
i think its a name given to them when the covenant was formed. because if you got the special edition halo 2 and watched the extra dvd you'd see in one section they explain how the covenant was formed.
-
You failed to mention the Huggarok, which are the Engineers of the Covenant. Although not shown in the game, they are described in the books (and it turns out they produce the needles used in a needler). So They are the Blood-sons... hmmm... Indeed, perhaps it is a line in their oath. Perhaps they aren't actually the race known as Sangheili... perhaps that is the status of their race. That would explain it quite a bit. So perhaps the Elites will no longer be Sangheili in the Prophets' eyes. And that would mean that the Brutes are no longer the Jaralhanae, but the Sangheili. Although they didn't swear an oath...

Your information is valuable to the UNSC.......if there was a UNSC.......

Excellent work, the Hierarcs will be displeased. They'll send an abiter along with a team of specops elites to kill you for fifty million counts of heresy
-
There's also probably some sort of link between that fact and the speech given by the specops commander: "on the blood of our fathers, on the blood of our sons, we swore to uphold the Covenant" yada yada yada. and there you go.

Maybe their the sons of the forerunner and thats why te prophets wonted to eliminate them all.
