Little guide to the knowledge of the PC

*WARNING DO NOT BUY SAPHIRE RADEON 9800PRO [*]This might help you if you consider upgrading your computer. First off , this guide is dedicated to the people who have no knowledge about computer and who think that a celeron 2.8ghz is better than a duron 1.4 ghz. If you dont know what those 2 word means.....realy read this post. 1- The Cpu (Central Processing Unit) Your CPU is used to calculate things (YIPE) like player position, shadow, bullet speed, damage and about everything else that need to be calculated. In fact games that has some complex AI (if you dont know what AI mean .... go watch Red vs Blue ..... If you dont know whta is red vs blue leave this forum now) will need a better CPU (Like the halo campain). Your cpu has ALMOST nothing to do with the visual appearence of a game (This is handled by the video card) so if you want better visual and you have an half decent cpu dont even bother upgrading it. ........So lets go into details There is 2 brand of cpu : INTEL (INTegrated ELectronic) and AMD (Advanced Micro Device) INTEL Pentium 1 Play game that are 10 years old .... if you want to play halo or any other game get a newer CPU Pentium 2 Same things as pentium 1 Pentium 3 This CPU is the minimum to play today game and its the VERY minimum. P3 range from 450 to 1300 mhz. If you have a P3 with less than 800 mhz you will not be able to play halo. With more than 800mhz you will be able to play halo (or some other new games) but with poor performance. Pentium 4 There is 4 variant of the p4 : The P4a , the P4b , the P4c and the P4e P4a (1.3ghz to 1.8ghz) Mhz for Mhz the p3 is better than those CPU. The P4a is a rushed CPU made by intel to compete with the AMD. Those CPU were and are still a waste of money. Those cpu were replaced by the P4b. Using a p4a you will be able to play halo with some good fps (depending on the speed of it and of your video card) but in the campain and in medium fight you will notice some major slow down... P4b (1.8ghz to 2.6ghz (i do think that there is a 2.8ghz version)) A much better version of the P4. Still weaker than the AMD variant those p4 offer good perfomance in every game including halo. With a cpu like this (still depend on his speed) you will be able to play halo with good fps with some minor slowdown in big fight. P4c (2.4ghz to 3.4ghz) also called NORTHWOOD The best series of P4. Those cpu are very powerfull and are only beaten by the more recent AMD 64bit CPU. With a cpu like this you should be able (if you have a good video card) to play halo with almost no slow down of any kind. (Those cpu are also good overclocker). If you want this CPU to perform to his max you MUST have dual channel ram (more on that later). P4e (2.4ghz to 3.4ghz) also called PRESCOTT In one word : WASTE. Those cpu perform less than the "c" version of the p4 and HEAT A LOT. If you buy this cpu you will no longer need to heat your room during winter. Celeron (any kind) Pure waste of silicon and money. Those cpu are a shame. Take your money and go buya real cpu. In fact a 2.4ghz Celeron is 50 to 70 % slower than a cheap (30$) AMD Duron 1400mhz. If you play halo with this cpu you will get some major slow down even in calm zone. P4 extreme A VERY VERY expensive Cpu. If you play halo with this cpu you not notice any lag even in the biggest fight. For 1000$+ those cpu are a waste of money over the less expensive athlon 64 who offer equivalent performance. AMD NOTE : THE NUMBER THAT REPRESENT THE CPU (EX: 3200+) DO NOT REPRESENT THE CLOCK SPEED (A 3200+ run at 2.2ghz) but dont be fooled clock rate do not represent speed. Ex: A A64 3400+ at 2.4 ghz is faster than a p4c 3.2ghz. K6 Waste. Athlon "no xp" (600 to 1400mhz) Those cpu perform a little less than the p3 With a 800 mhz Athlon or more you SHOULD be able to play halo with 5 fps (Frame per second) Athlon xp (1400+ to 3200+) Those cpu are cheap, fast, stable....(speed depend on the model) Generaly those cpu are the best choice for a cheap and good pc. Cheaper than the best celeron the slowest athlon xp (1400+) can triple the performance of the celeron. Go figure... Those CPU will play halo very well depending on the model. 1400 to 2000 = Small slowdown in big battle 2200 to 3200 = Very good performance Athlon 64 (2800, 3000, 3200, 3400) The A64 2800 is litterally the best price/performance cpu out there. The A64 3400 is among the best cpu ever made so far. For the price those cpu are great , and 64 bit is a bonus. Any of those CPU play halo with no lag of any kind. :D (Those are my personnal favorite) Athlon FX (51-53) Pretty much like the P4 Extreme edition but ..... faster and with 64 bit (more like a bonus). Those are simply the fastest. If you have problem playing halo with those one you are smoking good things or you have a very bad video card. 2-The video card The video card is the what generate all the beatifull effect in a game (ie: halo). There is 2 company who make video card : ATI and NVIDIA (Any other brand is PURE waste). The better your video card the faster the frame will go (FPS : frame per second). Cards will be classified like this: -Name: xxxxxxx -Memory: xxx -Speed: xx/10 -Comment: xxxxxxxxxxx NVIDIA -Name: Geforce 256 and less -Memory: 16,32 or 64 -Speed: 0.5/10 -Comment: i would not bother playing halo with this. -Name: Geforce2 -Memory: 16,32 or 64 -Speed: 1.5/10 -Comment: Fair performance for its age and very low price. -Name: Geforce2 mx -Memory: 32 or 64 -Speed: 0.2/10 -Comment: Forget it. -Name: Geforce3 -Memory: 32 or 64 -Speed: 3 or 4 depending on the model /10 -Comment: Aging but still good cards (better than any mx) and you can have those for very low $$$. -Name: Geforce4 mx400 or 440 -Memory: 64 or 128 -Speed: 2/10 -Comment: A glorified Geforce 2 with higher clock rate. -Name: Geforce 4 Ti-4200 -Memory: 64 or 128 -Speed: 4/10 -Comment: VERY good card for the price but no directx 9 support (less eyes candy). Showing its age. BTW the 128 mb version WITH agp 8x is the fastest version. The 128 mb version with no agp is a card using very slow ram. -Name: Geforce 4 Ti-4400 -Memory: 64 or 128 -Speed: 4.2/10 -Comment: An overclocked Ti-4200. Get a 4200 and overclock it... -Name: Geforce 4 Ti-4600 -Memory:64 or 128 -Speed: 4.4/10 -Comment: An overclocked Ti-4400. Get a 4200 and overclock it more... The FX cards got 2 version : non-ultra and ultra..... The ultra is an overclocked version of the other. Basically 10-15% faster. -Name: Geforce FX-5200 and 5200ultra -Memory: 64, 128 and 256 -Speed: 2/10 -Comment: Waste of money, the 128 and 256 mb version are even more a waste. Halo is playable but almost no eye candy. Low fps in large battle. "Support DX9" -Name: Geforce FX-5500 -Memory: 128 and 256 -Speed: 2.1/10 -Comment: A tad faster than the fx5200, but still very crappy as a card. -Name: Geforce FX-5600 and 5600ultra -Memory: 128 -Speed: 3.5/10 -Comment: I am sceptical about those card. They perform slow in some game and good in other. In halo they run between slow and medium. Not all the eyes candy can be turned on. Support DX9 -Name: Geforce FX-5700 and 5700ultra -Memory: 128 and 256 -Speed: 4.5/10 -Comment: Pretty good mid-range card. Use good memory. Halo playable with smooth frame rate. Some slowdown in battle. Eye candy turned on and 800x600 should be playable. 256mb Version not much expensive compared to 128mb but still not much performance difference. Support DX9 -Name: Geforce FX-5800 and 5800ultra -Memory: 6.5/10 -Speed: 128 and 256 -Comment: Also called the leaf blower this card make terrible noise and push a lot of air. A big fiasquo. Run realy bad in some game. *Discontinued* . Performance in halo are good with some visual quality problem. "Support DX9" -Name: Geforce FX-5900 and 5900ultra -Memory: 128 and 256 -Speed: 8.8/10 -Comment: Much better version of the 5800. This card is less noisy. Performance are a bit under the ATI equivalent , the 9800pro. Performance in halo should be very good with all eyes candy on and a resolution of 1024*768. Support DX9 -Name: Geforce FX-5950ultra -Memory: 256 -Speed: 9/10 -Comment: Not much more speed than the 5900ultra (1-4% more) but a BIG price difference...Basically a overclocked 5900ultra. Support DX9 -Name: Geforce FX-5900XT -Memory: 128 -Speed: 7/10 -Comment: This is a VERY good card for the price. It can even be overclocked to a 5900ultra. Good halo performance. Support DX9. -Name: Geforce FX-6800 -Memory: 256mb -Speed: 10/10 -Comment: Very good card. Support PS 3.0. About 40% faster than FX-5900 -Name: Geforce FX-6800GT -Memory: 256mb -Speed: 13.9/10 -Comment: The best card to get at the moment, Kill everything for the price!!! -Name: Geforce FX-6800LE -Memory: 128mb -Speed: 8.5/10 -Comment: Much faster than the 9800pro/5900ultra in some games....slower in other. Good card for 200$ and less. -Name: Geforce FX-6800ultra -Memory: 256mb -Speed: 14/10 -Comment: About 100-120% faster than 5950ultra... [Edited on 8/29/2004 11:25:30 AM]

 • the best bang for the buck these days is the nVidia 6600 GT....which beats the 9800 pro and XT and any older family Radeon card basically 9800 XT and below.....and its only around 150 to 200 bucks! its an awsome card.... you could probably find a cheap one at www.newegg.com

 • Yea I wouldnt bother unlocking pipelines because you wont see much difference in Performance and if you do, you could probably end up wih artifacts....so I would stick to how the card is now, save up money and then get a better video card..... The X800 XL is an awsome card

 • I doubt it will make a huge differnce, the card wasn't designed for more so you will probably run into problems that aren't worth it. I'm looking at the x800xl for the comp I'm building.

 • For ATI SE= is beasically called shytty edition because it has less pipelines and a very low clock speed, not worth it unless you want to do some hardcore Modding and overclocking, like unlocking pipelines, flashing bios and so on,,,, XL= is a new line that was born in the X800 series, it is better then the pro because it has 16 pipelines, cheaper, and performs better then the pro. pro= back in the day when the 9600 and 9800 were first out, these were great cards if you were on a budget and didnt have enough for the XT edition....but now the X800 pro, is worse then the X800 XL, and is more expensive....again, modding is possible... you can unlock pipelines but the risk of artifacts is high and sometimes you can permanently damage your card if you unlock them...so yea also the X850 pro is 12 pipelines which is kinda lame.... XT= this version is the second best because they have the most pipelines and the fastest clock speeds but if you want more...... XT PE= this version was born in the X800 series.... the XT PE(platinum edition) has the highest of everything...so far the PE's have about +20 mhz core speed then XT, but the upcoming X900 XT PE will have more pipelines 32 to be exact....but for the X800 and X850 the XT PE's only have higher clock speeds... For nVidia LE= a waste of money unless your on a tight budget, equivalent to SE plain or Vanila ex. 6800, 6600= these cards arent the greatest but if you overclock youll be fine GT= this is a new version in the 6 series of Nvidia cards and this version is probably the best bang for the buck Ultra= top of the line Ultra Extreme= slightly overclocked ultra, not worht the extra money also the 6800 Ultra 512 edition is a waste of money the 7800 GTX is cheaper and is much better and now for the 7 series GTX= this card is best out of all so far GT= I believe there will be a 7800 GT and a 7600 GT so yea these cards are awsome so there ya have it, to sum it all up....stay away from SE, LE, plain...plain is ok on budget, EZ cards...some 9600 are EZ which suck.....

 • Update: an X800 XL which has 16 pipelines and 400 mhz core is better, and cheaper then an X800 pro, so yea screw the X800 pro, cuz for cheaper you can get the X800 XL which performs better

 • I'm saving up for the R520 ATi cores myself. One hits above 10,000 in 3D Mark, which is about a 2,500 increase over the 7800GTX. I'm sure it'll be higher in price than the 7800GTX, but I can't tell. All I know is that 10,000 in 3D Mark is already hard to impossible to get... 10 windows? I think you need to slow down. That's insane. Your brain must be tired after a few hours :S

Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX.......that baby just hit the market, its very expensive but i have halo, chaos theory, battlefield 2, half life 2, and farcry all installed on my comp with all highest settings and i get absolutely no lag.

 • I know but my computer dosn't lag that much. Just in games. As you can probably notice if you go into the teamspeak testing thread no one else has problems either using hte server programs on my computer. I will say this is heck, but jeeze, this computer has a nack for taking crap. And either the sound card control panel is this crappy thing that messes with windows sounds or they have it nice and hidden where you're not supposed to find it. Or they just might not include one. Wouldn't shock me much.

 • if you have a separate sound card, it should have it's own control panel, shouldn't it? Honestly, you try to multitask way too much for what you have. 10 windows at a time!!!!! 10 windows is a little extreme, even for hyper threading. really, you need to slow down. According to your last post, you're using up almost all of the 4GB of page file that 32bit computing allows. That is insane! [Edited on 7/4/2005]

 • scans for viruses at 8:00 every morning eastern time (-5 hourst gmt). You'd be surprised how much of my page file is used. I'm thinking about contactign my half brother and building one from scratch. According to the owners manual, this thing can't handle hte best. I want the best. As for the reversing head phones, how would i check if that's happening. Despite the fact that i only notice it in halo, i think it runs fine. How exactly would i check that?

 •
Posted by: Kohlrak Exactly what is overclocking? (and what are the disadvantages and how can you do it?) I have a premade computer by Dell. (I was not prewarned of making one yourself.) I hope actually upgrade this thing. Other than when the plasma rifle and pistol overheats my computer slows down dramatically and that i crash every once in a while on single player, i have absolutly no problem running halo on highest detail i can get. But i noticed when i enable sound card buffering, when i have my head phones on i have to put my left on my right ear and my right speaker on my left ear. Also i have outside halo issues like when my CPU usage goes up or go into a full screen game, my mic volume all the sudden shoots up an extra mic boost on teamspeak. (as if you could mic boost +40 instead of +20) Always have issues with recording programs throwing up that mic volume. Anyway, mine is... (I'm not proud of my peice of crap. That's what i get for being an utter hardware moron, software on the other hand, don't you dare start anything. lol Note: DxDiag readout.) Video: Nvidia Geforce MX 420 (if you upgrade your drivers, never do it through automatic updates, compy will crash.) Sound: Creative SB Live! Series (yes, i'm ashamed.) Memory (Random Access): 256 MB (Sad, right?) Memory (Read Only AKA Hard Drive): About 60 gigs. (Sick, but i really don't need all the ROM.) Page File(Probably what makes the damn thing handle all that i put it through): 3635 MB Processor: Intel(r) Pentium(r) 4 CPU 2.53 GHz What i put it throuh: Halo (High Detail), Trillian 3 (with plugins and all my names = 46924 mem usage on task manager. NOTHING else eats up that much or even gets a 4th. And if some one not on my bl ims me, comp goes into major lag.), my horrible C++ programming. Other than that i don't do much accept keep over 10 windows open at all times. Actually, for a company made computer, this isn't bad at all handling it. But maybe my brain runs with as much lag as my comptuer so i don't always notice it.
my comments: overclocking is making hardware run faster than it's rated for. Premade computers such as dell lock the settings needed for overclocking. The main thing to overclock for gaming is the video card. Check your video card manufacturer's website to see if they have an overclocking application. The main enemy and mistake of overclocking is making it run so fast that it overheats, so only make the speed slightly faster at a time (5 Mhz steps), run it for an hour or 2, and see if you get errors. This may void your warranty sometimes, so check that out too. slowing down with plasma overheat: excessive particles during the overheat is normal. reversing headphones: make sure that a sound card setting isn't switching the L and R signals. I do not think buffering is the main cause. mic volumes: dunno. i don't use teamspeak or have a microphone to use. you should upgrade your ram before anything else. Maps and stuff are loaded into main ram, not video card. video card just holds textures for the map and stuff. I just got a half-life 2 demo, and it stutters occasionally because of my ram. I looked at my free space on my ram with half life 2 demo running, and i only had like 3MB left. you should only have the page file set to 1.5x of the ram you have. more than 1.5x of your ram is really just wasted space. You might get a slight boost in performance if you: scan for viruses and spyware defragment your hard drive regularly shut down unnecessary background programs (instant messenger, special control panels) [Edited on 7/3/2005]

 • I would recommend you to get an amd 64 socket 939 processor, for a low budget the best bang for the buck is the amd 64 3500 socket 939, and for it, get the MSI K8n neo2 platinum nforce3 ULTRA. Then spend the rest of the money in a good case with good cooling and a 80G hd ( i think 80 gigs is just enough...people who get 250gig are crazy)..and get some good ram such as the pqi turbo pc3200 DDr400 cas latency 2-2-2-5. and u r ready because the sound is on the mother board msi and the only thing u need to buy left is the PSU (power supply. 400w minimum - recommended-, or maybe you could buy a case that brings a good power supply). i think your budget can buy that stuff. because u have already the higher things in price (graphics card and monitor...but you the only high price thing in the list i gave u is the cpu In conclusion i would recommend u to get: - amd 64bit 3200 socket 939 - MSI k8n neo 2 platinum nforce3ULTRA for socket 939 - hrad drive with at least 60 or 80 gigas of memory. - pqi turbo pc3200 2-2-2-5 - case with or w/o a good psu..the case should have good airflow ( cooling). - if the case dosent has a good psu then get a 400w psu from antec OCZ or thermaltake. The best is OCZ. newegg.com has good prices and good shipping. the rig im getting will be bought on newegg.com ( everything except for the graphics card which is out of stock in newegg, so im getting it for 7 $ more on unitedmicro.com.) • Hey coylter, i have 3 questions for you: 1. What is what everyone talks about something called 3dmark04 or 05? 2. Is there any asus mobo socket 939 with the nvidia chipset nforce3 250Gb?because i thought, the athlon 64 3400 is the best 754 socket cpu out there, so, if i wanted to upgrade in the future, there will be no faster socket 754 cpu than the one i have, because i think that the socket 754 cpus are on its max and that the ones that are going to evolve are the socket 939, am i right, shoul i change the 64 3400 for a 64 3500 and the asus mobo socket 754 for a 939 one for just like 40 $? . -i think im right on this- 3.The only socket 939 available from asus is the VIA K8T800 Pro (im only buying mobos from asus becasue iv read too much good comments about them) , is this a good mobo, does the onboard sound ( 8 channels) is good enough for me not to need to buy a sound card and use the 7.1 surround creative speakers?, BTW: if im right this is a really good decision if upgrading is something coming in aboout 3 years. What do you think about the viak8t800 pro against the nforce3 250gb or the nforce4 (coming in a weeks) should i wait for the nvidia based boards, do you think they are coming out by asus?
