...if he was just going to risk his life saving her later?
Is it because they didn't know that the Gravemind would Slipspace High Charity to the Ark?
Also, how did Cortana know, in her message, that the Portal leads to a way to stop the Flood, when the Portal presumably hadn't even opened up when she sent the message?
EDIT: I know that she wanted to detonate In Amber Clad's reactors, but she never did that. We end up manually destroying High Charity's reactors later.

Hey! Now I get it! Thanks so much for your answer, oh great Fabled Legendary Member! Seriously though, that was the answer I was looking for. So that means that if the Arbiter, Johnson, and Miranda failed to stop the firing sequence, Cortana would have blown up High Charity and Halo. But would she have been destroyed too? Does that also mean that the above trio's success in the control room render Cortana's mission null and void? Because as a result of that, she only stayed behind JUST to stall the Dreadnought's launch. That sucks.

Which is why I inquired about Cortana changing her mind as a result of the Gravemind transporting High Charity to the Ark. And thanks for the other answers!
Well she had to stay to help slow down the dreadnought, to make sure it didn't launch. She also had to stay in case Halo was activated, that way she could destroy it (And High Charity) with In Amber Clad's reactors. She didn't have to blow up the reactors because the Halo's activation was stopped, I think.
Posted by: Wolverfrog What I find strange is how the Gravemind put so much trust in the Arbiter to stop Tartarus firing the ring. There weren't any Flood in Uprising or the Great Journey. Surely the Gravemind, in his omniscience, wouldn't entrust such a vital task to one who had believed in the Great Journey all his life? Perhaps he had a back up plan. Perhaps I should come up with an insane theory...
I think it's because he knew that the Arbiter would try his hardest to stop the rings from firing, because he knew if he failed everyone would be dead. But that still doesn't explain why he sent only a few people. You'd think that he'd want to be sure, so he'd send an entire Flood armada. I think though, that Bungie just didn't think of the idea of us fighting with flood until Halo 3.

Gravemind knows alot of the forunner secrets.........

It was probably a last ditch effort. Besides, he knew the Arbiter hated the brutes.
Posted by: Wolverfrog I really liked the idea that Cortana was in cahoots with the Gravemind the entire time; and that she was betraying humanity. However, it would seem Halo 3 put an end to that wonderful theory.
Wasent that a theory that came up with Halo 2? That Cortana was in fact the leader of the Flood or something like that? Lol i remember when the people speculated the MC being a girl. Good times.

Don't be ridiculous, I was thinking more along the lines of them being organic pistols.

Well, her original plan was to detonate In Amber Clad's fusion reactor, and destroy High Charity, the huge debris of which would fall to Halo and destroy it in turn. She probably would have waited until no other option was possible, due to the fact hundreds of humans were still on Halo. However, there was no need to, because Keyes stopped the ring from firing. Then the Gravemind corrupted her. I really liked the idea that Cortana was in cahoots with the Gravemind the entire time; and that she was betraying humanity. She also had to keep the forerunner ship from taking off so that the Master Chief could board it. You even see in the game when Cortana stops him from downloading her back into his suit before he was going to use the pipe.

I just need someone to fill in a gap, I'm not trying to expose a hole on the plot. I think the entire Halo universe is expertly thought up and proofed against itself.
