Thorn is a problem once again and people are up in arms about how it should be nerfed. The trouble is nerfing any weapon is like surgery and you don't want to make a weapon, especially a fancy exotic weapon unusable. No one used Thorn initially because they thought it was garbage and then it got buffed and became a monster and so on.
A lot of people argue that Thorn should have a DoT (Damage over time) effect for the purposes of PvP, saying they should just replace it with a tracking mark, like the Nightstalker ability. Thematically, Thorn is an evil, EVIL piece of darkness that looks like a gun. The terror of Dregden Yor being that he could see people he'd already shot doesn't sound as good as rending his enemies apart with a cursed gun, does it. It's still a problem but no one argues this point against Sunsingers or Sunbreakers that both have this ability. The reason being is that there is a limit to how often they can use it which would seem to be the most obvious solution. But, there are a number of ways to go about this.
• Mark of the Devourer only prokes on precision hits. Easy in PvE with the masses of slow mobs but a challenge against a very mobile guardian.
• Mark of Devourer can't kill a target. You can't rely on kills from beyond the grave to get ahead.
• Mark of Devourer shots consume you Super Energy. Say you either want to use a large powerful super attack or instead chance it with a more versatile option.
• Mark of the Devourer affects all shots after getting an precision kill for a brief period. Same solution as the first point but a different way to handle it.
• Reduce the effect of the DoT on Guardians and make it more potent against Minions of the Darkness.
• Change Thorn to a Special Weapon. This keeps the weapon being affective but limits its use be reducing the amount of Ammo you can provide it. However in PvE, there's an abundance of Special Ammo so it can be used to its full effect.

No change is needed to thorn

Edited by MyRYNOrunshot: 1/20/2016 9:14:58 AMI'd like you point out for everyone complaining about my ccomplaining, the title of this posts is "How to make the gun better in PvE without it becoming unfair in PvP". Which means, and I'll use small words, I don't want the gun to be worse, I want it to be better but not become the monster it was previously. But apparently reading the damn title is too much effort for some people. Or this kind of reaction is compolsive or something.

21 RepliesEdited by Insatiable: 1/20/2016 1:20:25 AMSurgery ? Lmao this was downright malpractice, you are complaining about a gun that : 1) can't be spammed anymore due to general hand cannon nerfs (excluding last word) 2) will get wrecked in close range by shotguns and outgunned at medium to long range by scouts 3) is the only gun that has an effect that makes an opponent think twice instead of just charging in like a fool.
-
5 RepliesMark of the devour stay the same but reduces the wieldeds armor by 2
-
2 RepliesThorn cant 2 shot last word can the thorn is balanced and it takes skill too
-
This is just retarded how about the last word ?
-
No. This is -blam!-ing dumb.
-
...why touch a Year 1 gun once more? It's useless to.
-
1 ReplyInstead of the dot reduces your live The dot reduces your abilitys, let's say every tick is 2 sec.
-
3 RepliesAre you a year 2 player by any chance? If so get lost you have no grounds for complaint!!
-
3 RepliesAnother nerf cry.
-
5 Repliesyup, leave it alone. It's a year 1 weapon. Worthless in PVE, and is a rarely seen weapon in PVP, though slowly changing now that a crying nerf herder got killed, and then ranted about it. Causing a few to pick it back up to see how it does. Most found it a shell of its former self, though the louder the nerf herders cry the more we want to pick it back up, and shoot you with it. The thorn is not OP, it doesn't do what it once did. This is the problem. People hate getting killed in the crucible, and are obviously the best in the game, and the only reason they lose a gunfight, is the other player using an OP gun. The real problem with thorn. Nerf herder got killed, made a post screaming for a nerf. More picked the gun up, and killed more nerf herders, causing them to cry on the forums,, causing more and more people to pick up the gun, killing even more nerf herders, making nerf herders cry even louder, causing even more people to pick up the gun ect ect ect. So the cause of your thorn deaths are not an OP gun, but you, who made people pick the gun up, and give it a go again. It may not be the thorn of old, but it does bring about the satisfaction of knowing you are making a nerf herder cry so hard he wets himself.

2 Repliesthorn , and only in vanila pvp, is the only good tool to cause havoc on the ridiculously unflinching magnet bullet sniper users. if anything, Thorn should be brought to year 2 levels and the nerf should be removed.
-
1 ReplyIt's ok for the burn of warlock malee to kill after our dead , but not Thorn. Seem the whole problem is that people don't like the DoT. This is because they rush in with a shot gun and kill the shooter , but the DoT kills them. Seem the solutions is no to rush in. Most hand cannon kills in 2 or 3 shots, Thorn no different. Each weapon should have a perk to set it apart. The DoT does do that and should never have been nerfed. If you cannot beat it cry about it.

1 ReplyGo kill yourself
-
4 RepliesOr you could stop bitching about it and play the game.
-
1 ReplyAll you need to do is make the dot act faster. It takes too long to do damage so speed it up and it makes the whole burn problem go away. Also that range and rate of fire HAS to go down.
-
1 ReplyBesides Gjallahorne, Thorn was one of the most iconic weapons in Destiny, and one of if not THE most recognizable by the sound it made when fired. Not to mention the trouble you had to go through to get it. To have it Nerf'd and, more of a slap in the face, LEFT BEHIND is just silly.
-
1 Replywe have better things to worry about in crucible like lag but ya know... people wanna discuss a nerfed gun that is mainly used in sweats.
-
1 ReplyOr just leave it alone.
-
5 RepliesEdited by Gu4rdi4n Down: 1/19/2016 1:46:28 AMBring it to year 2, change the dot from 3 down to 2 that makes it then a four shot body kill but will still keep it at 2 crits and a body to kill in 3 shots, no need to rewrite the lore or change any perks with the weapon. and the gun is not a problem, the problem is the fools who don't run to cover when hit.
-
Minus the super energy part, this is a good idea.
-
4 RepliesI have a brilliant idea... We leave it alone. If you learned how to counter it in year 1, its even easier to do so now. If you need your year 1 guns to counter it, guess what? You can use those! Since Thorn only is effective where all those year 1 guns are!
• Mark of the Devourer only prokes on precision hits. Easy in PvE with the masses of slow mobs but a challenge against a very mobile guardian.
These are the changes I've been asking for since HoW, they could Increase the DoT in this case for all I care, I'm just sick of scrubs who get kills with 3 bodyshots because they're incapable of being accurate with anything else. alternatively they could just revert it back to how it was in vanilla but with better reload and increased DoT against AI.
-
I agree with the first one, after that it's a bit overboard.
-
2 RepliesOr get this...its a year one weapon and It already got nerfed. So since it isn't usable in endgame content anyway lets look on actually improving them game instead of yelling about everything that has killed you
