If you are new there is a lot for you to do. Destiny is far from dead, some people just ... well, they speak for themselves. As for future expansions to Destiny, Bungie has said they have allocated future updates to the 'live' team. They are responsible for a number of things in particular events such as Iron Banner, Trials of Osiris, Festivals, Sparrow Racing (SRL), etc. I for one am looking forward to what their next offering will be. I personally did not get to deep into SRL but it was creative and has potential for the future. I do not believe there will be any future DLC expansions though. Destiny 2 will probably be the next major expansion to which your characters (not necessarily your weapons, armor) will transfer forward to. Hope that helps. Good luck guardian!
