Who knew? A little lesson in orbology.

Greetings my fellow guardians. And good day. Today I will be discussing a matter that many people here do not know. I'm talking about orbs. Did you know that there are two types of orbs? Big and small. Big orbs take 8 to fully charge a super. Small ones take 16. "But Embracing, what do you mean by big and small orbs?" Glad you asked! You see, each subclass makes a different size of orbs. The following subclasses create large orbs: Sunsinger, Defender, Striker, Voidwalker, and Gunslinger. Here's a quick breakdown on how this works... Sunsinger- Any kill while in radiance generates orbs. Melees, grenades, and of course regular kills. In addition, the Sunburst perk has the ability to create two more orbs. All are large orbs. Defender- The Ward of Dawn immediately creates two orbs upon deployment. An additional three can be created through the use of gift of the void. The perk for force barrier, gift of light, creates additional orbs on melee kills, while the ability is active. HOWEVER, the iron harvest perk, which grants orbs through the method of heavy kills, generates smaller orb. Striker- Probably the simplest of these big orbers. The Fist of Havoc generates large orbs. Nothing more to say. Voidwalker- Another simple one. Nova bomb creates large orbs. Nothing more to say. (It has been rumored that lance and shatter affect the amount of orbs created. This is being tested by myself and a few friends.) Gunslinger- Last big orber. The Golden Gun creates large orbs. Simply all there is. Now we get to the remaining classes. Stormcaller, Nightstalker, Sunbreaker, and Blade Dancer. Let's discuss... Stormcaller- The Stormtrance super generates a mix of both large and small orbs. Depending on the amount of lightning you out into an enemy. The longer and enemy is exposed, the larger the orbs. This is why larger enemies, such as centurions or captains or minotaurs or Knights, drop larger orbs than shanks, dregs, acolytes, etc. Nightstalker- Perhaps the most controversial orb maker here. This orb machine, or so it appears, makes small orbs and large orbs. Upon initial super use, two large orbs are generated. Each additional enemy tethered spawns another orb. With the Light of the Pack perk, up to 8 more small orbs can be created when tethered enemies are defeated. (9 with the Crest of Alpha Lupi) Sunbreaker- This subclass simply makes small orbs. (A test is underway to prove wether or not suncharge affects orb generation.) Blade Dancer- These guys make nothing but small orbs. Nothing else to say. Now that we have discussed the subclasses, let's talk about relics and armor. I'll be brief. All artifacts that spawn orbs, be it by melee, grenade or precision kills, make small orbs. Armor from the Vault of Glass, Crotas End, and Kings Fall, I.e. Vex striker, Vexbreaker, etc., make small orbs. This concludes our lesson in orbology! Any questions? Feel free to ask. (This post is of course subject to change. All negative comments will be removed. These are the results of nearly four weeks of testing so please, rude comments to yourself.) Edit 1: Thanks for the replies so far! Hope everyone that reads can benefit from this. Edit 2: Left one way of making orbs out! Boltcaster does spawn small orbs with its perk. Edit 3: Left out Telesto! It creates small orbs. Shout out to my friend who pointed this out. Edit 4: Oh my goodness I'm trending. Thank you all for your support! Edit 5: Another thing to note about orbs is the process we have decided to call orb dilution. It is the process by which orbs created by allies in turn spawn smaller, less super yielding orbs, when the super is cast. Edit 6: I'd like to thank you all for the support. My team and I are working right now to add videos of our research to YouTube. All vids should be done by the end of the month at the latest. Will post the links here when that happens.

  • Great post. Its stupid that bladedancer makes small orbs. "The longer and enemy is exposed, the larger the orbs. This is why larger enemies, such as centurions or captains or minotaurs or Knights, drop larger orbs than shanks, dregs, acolytes, etc." Are you sure this has to do with the time of exposure and not just the type of enemy? Killing majors generates more orbs I believe.

Orb size has nothing to do with subclasses. It's determined how much light an enemy has. A thrall (or any tier 1) enemy has less light. So less recharge energy. It also uses up less energy from your super. For example it needs only 1 bladedancer swing. Higher tier enemies have more light and produce orbs with more recharge energy. They also need more super energy to be killed. You can easily try this with a storm caller. While wipes through a bunch of thralls, you will need to stand a little longer next to a higher health bar enemy to fry up Try it in the undying mind strike. Your super meter is almost instantly filled up when you kill all the yellow health bar enemies. And in turn if you pick up orbs made from your team mate it's the same.

      • So in the name of science…recorded this one a couple months back (edited to shorten and re-post) so not sure if the super still generates the same numbers, but me and a random guardian were able to generate about 77 orbs with 5 instances of the Shadowshot in a 2 minute span while on Venus patrol with Enemy moving against each other. It was fun times. I think I counted over 20 orbs each with two of my supers…likely all small orbs though.

      • So here is the thing... The small and large orbs actually has nothing to do with your subclass. The introduction of the small orbs was a nerf Bungie did quite some time ago. They made this nerf to hinder people from constantly charging each other's supers. Not sure the exact specs on what causes the small orbs (eg. Time between super, charging over half super with orbs, etc.) But I do know, if you use a super and instantly charge it with orbs, you will only produce small orbs. This was Bungie's way of stopping (or at least hindering) the titan bubble glitch in iron banner. Because 4 defender titans with crest all producing 3 big orbs will always be super charged, and will be able to make limitless orbs for teammates. Hope this helps further research. I would love to find out the specs on what really causes small orbs. :) However, to the best of my knowledge, you are absolutely correct on the orb making weapons. They all only produce small orbs.

        • Good thread, so it would be better to have a Sunsinger generate Orbs at the start when a Team runs Oryx rather than the Hunter.

Actually a good post for all the new people out there and the newer people. I love when people chain supers all the way through a raid or even through a strike. I actually just did it with a couple of randoms and it was pretty much back to back supers with 2 titans and a hunter which maid very short work of the strike. My group actually calls them full orbs and empty orbs.

          • Damn... No wonder why some of the orbs I eat doesn't recharge a lot of super energy than I expected. Like you said, the large orbs charge supers further than the smaller ones. Science! I wondered back on Y1 all the orbs were large... Just a thought... Back when a teammate constantly produced a bunch of orbs during a strike, our supers would instantly recharge if we collected at least 6 or more provided that the former charge came from killing enemies. Figured why I see more small orbs than large orbs to this year. Gotta generate an orb research station!

          • Artifacts have like 5% chance to work, then create a useless orb. Shame. they don't even work in pvp.

Skyburner's Annex helm is an orbmaker as well :> Edit: Not sure what size though, i noticed the size differences in the orbs lately but never thought more into it. Thanks for the read!

            • Is the super energy you get from orbs different in PvP vs PvE? I mean, does it take 8 orbs to charge your super in both PvE and PvP equally? It seems like (this is subjective not factual) in my experience orbs give me more super energy in PvP, that is why I am asking.
