Feedback about feedback "It's only a game!"

Destiny. The promise of being a Legend. The promise of power. The promise of getting more powers, therefore, getting more bang from my play through. I could just accept it for the sake of 'wishing for more fun' from what I was expecting, and disregarding the moral dilemma presented since, hey, it’s just a game, right? But really, I just can’t ignore the circumstances or the options given to me by the game, whose marketing was beautifully crafted — perfect, even — that people like me cannot just ignore it. But it’s just the same as someone asking you, would you do this or that? And just because it’s only a video game, doesn’t mean that the dilemma holds less weight on ones personal moral system than a question, or even a real life situation. It is the essence of it all, the core, the very problem that everyone should have a need to address. It should make you ask yourself: is this what I really want for what I am paying? do I really want to do this (compromise my principals?) Simple questions, yes? But one with the ability to summon grave consequences of compromising yourself in the real world. In psychology, it is called Cognitive dissonance which refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. This produces a feeling of discomfort leading to an alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the discomfort of conflicting morals and principals. So to me, your cognitive dissonance is nothing more than a lie you are tell yourself. People may run into problems with cognitive dissonance because it can be, in its most basic form, a sort of lie to oneself. As with all lies, it depends on the size of the lie and whether it’s more likely to hurt you in some way in the long run. Many tell “little white lies” everyday in their social lives (“Oh yes, that’s a great color on you!”) that brings little harm to either side and might help smooth over otherwise awkward situations. So while cognitive dissonance resolves the internal anxiety we face over two opposing beliefs or behaviors, it may also inadvertently reinforces future bad decisions - whether you think so or not. After all, dissonance theory suggests that if individuals act in ways that contradict their core beliefs, then they typically will change their beliefs to align with their actions (or vice-a-versa). So, since most people don’t like to believe that they may be wrong, they may limit their intake of information, or thinking, about things in ways that don’t fit within with their pre-existing beliefs. Psychologists call this “confirmation bias.” So if you are a person that is not a person of higher morals, or even moderate principals, it is a no brainer, after all its not real life to expect something for your money, its only a game (albeit, an expensive one.)

  • I think it's unfair to say that I don't "have morals" because I enjoy playing Destiny with my best friend and cousin who I have little to no contact with in real life. I've said it before about guys like you, you have absolutely no respect for people with differing opinions or thoughts. So much so that you are now asserting that we are of lesser character... I get it, you don't like Destiny, you haven't given up the fight for the value you expected in year 1... But I'm not on that tip. I understand that there are other games that me and my cousin could play that perhaps, you would consider worthy, but I find the cooperative aspect of Destiny very enjoyable. I refuse to be labeled as a fool because I'm not interested in your political crusade. Hint, you want to make a difference... Do it with your dollar and inattention. There are literally people with no talent made famous daily due to infamy. Every time you buy, think, write, or speak about Destiny, you are contributing. However, if you feel the need to Continue playing and want to give feedback on the game. I say more power to you in expressing your thoughts. You are most certainly well written. Good feedback would most optimally be about the game, as opposed to the people who play it. I hope you can understand.

    • Exactly. Most people don't take the time to read the posts either, which makes me wonder: why go to the forums at all then?

      • Why can't people just walk away? I saw what Bungie was doing and where this game was headed and it became obvious it was time to stop playing Destiny so I did. Once Bungie decides to show its fans the respect they deserve for buying their paid Beta test and sticking with them despite the fact that they sold us half a game, then I might decide to return.

          • Brilliant piece, Kadeim. Being connected to this game in a way that transcends the actual gameplay, I can attest that I am challenged on a personal, on a moral, level by Destiny on a near-daily basis. For me, I must stay mindful of that. "It's just a game" is one of my least favorite statements around here. Because, as you articulate so well, it is and it isn't.
