So I have a question.
I'm not a fallout player yet, but what exactly is a synth? I'm probably getting the game for my birthday.

It's a Terminator.

It is the "weapon" of the institute. The are androids that copy humans exactly, kill them, and take their place. Family and friends can't even tell the difference. The institute wants to replace all humans with them because they feel humans are weak and will just repeat war again. They may have consciousness but that is debatable. They are found mainly in the commonwealth (fallout 4 location) and two were found in Capital wasteland (fallout 3)

Np, and don't worry about it spoiling the game. The NPC are super paranoid and talk about it constantly so it's not like your character has some big realization during the story where he learns about them.
