Bungie created a "MUST GET LOOT!" addiction system

That's what I think. A lot of people don't even play for fun anymore, just to get loot and progress. I get that's the point of the game but (especially after the 315 mark) the point of a game itself is to have fun while playing it. I think Challenge Mode proved it once again: people were not playing to achieve a goal or to try something harder (I get it they weren't hard at all, haha, laugh, ok.), but just for that 320 loot. What do you think? Let's have a positive and mature conversation, I don't want any "full retard" posts or people coming at me saying I'm an idiot because I have a different opinion than yours (WHICH IS INCREDIBLY STUPID IMO).

  • It is done on purpose and works well. Props to them for getting it right, a lot of companies fail.

It's definitely designed to addict. The Daily Resets exist to get you on once per day, lest you lose your one chance to get Legendary Marks for a whole 24 hours. The Weekly Resets exist to pressure you to get a slew of objectives done in a week before logging off. Xur's limited availability exists to make sure you log in every Friday to check his stock. Astronomically low RNG drops, combined with RNG rolls that can be good or bad, and with no way to trade with other players, exist to distract you from the actual lack of meaningful content (why make like, 20 unique strikes with reasonable drop rates when they can make you play the same 3 over and over again just to try to one-up a lower drop rate?). They do so many things to make you afraid to lose progress, to distract you from the fact that YOU CAN LEAVE. And that's exactly what I did. I've been clean of this game for almost two weeks and it feels great. A few times I've thought to myself "but what if Xur sells the Twilight Garrison while I'm gone?!", only to remember, I'm not coming back anyway! So it doesn't matter!

  • Rng is scientifically proven to be the most addictive way to hook people, random rewards hook us and these tactics are psychological ploys to keep us playing. These are well known facts.

  • I have fun playing the game, just running around and shooting shit. I honestly could have been 320 on 2 of my characters by now but i have infused every single piece of raid gear into gear that i actually like, i even have double sets at around 318, i dont do it to be 320, its all just for fun.

  • This game has been simulated gambling since VOG era. The addiction you feel is the reason they don't allow children into casinos. Kids will lose their college fund, and sell their Moms body to get it back. And even if you manage to beat the house, Bungie makes everything you grind for irrelevant when major light level increases. All that VOG, all that Crota, all that POE, all that Trials year one, all that IB year one. Worthless. House always wins

    • After playing so long doing the same thing over and over and over again visiting the same place on each planet, doing the same bounties day in day out I'm finally losing the addiction slowly. The only game that made me take a break before, back in tdb was the last of us. Now I'm playing fallout 4 there's alot to do. Destiny is a one of a kind game , I am addicted to it because I never played anything like it. Idk if it's just me but I can imagine how much potential this game had if they didn't rework the entire story

    • I like working towards the "always finding something better" aspect of games. Granted, it's definitely tedious if you don't have good friends to play with frequently.

      • When I first started playing Destiny I was horrible at it. PvE and PvP. It bothered me. I worked at getting better at it (though I stayed out of crucible for awhile) and I needed the loot to get higher light levels and good quality weapons to be raid ready. With some encouragement from my friends I started playing crucible and IB. Was awful at it. I'm not an elite player but I got better. Then again it became about grinding for good PvP weapons. SRL- first few times I tried it I was so bad it was hilarious. I kept at it learning the best angle to corner, best time to side boost, when, where and if you should take the shortcut. Then I got to SRL rank 3 and the 230 helmets started to drop. I kept it up because I haven't had any raid armor drop that high for me yet. Maybe you have a point...

        • Lots of games have, do, and will put emphasis on loot. I mean, I daresay a majority of games do it.

Rng random reward system, its a well known addictive gambling hook that they purposefully used to string out the tiny content. They made an addictive game but not a good one. We're smarter than they think and most except the gambling susceptible tire of the manipulative tactics.

Not going to say you went full retard. I would like to point out that bungie didn't create this model of gaming. It's been applied over recent years to many models of games on all different platforms. Most notably the mobile market. They, like any company, have to appeal to what the customers want, and this is what the customers want, in spite of what you may read on the forums. Edit: I don't believe that gamers originally wanted this, but game developers apparently realized that they could keep more people playing this way, and now it's the norm.

        • It's an incredibly successful algorithm that plays on the human addiction and collection parts of the brain. It's why some people love the game, others hate it. It's the same reason cods prestige system works so well, it's very addictive. Just look at sparrow racing? PvP is really suffering with lag coz a huge percentage of the playerbase are driving round in circles chasing the chance of 320 loot. Same with iron banner in November, people played way past rank 5 chasing 320 ghosts. I'd expect more of the same in the future. The devs said this week that pvp lag issues are due to the masses playing SRL.

That is the main selling point of an MMO. I know Destiny isn't an MMO, but it does take some elements from one.
