I am never in last, so it took me a while to notice this. We all know that the gates are bigger as your place is worse. This needs to go.
The other problem is that handling, especially on tight turns, is way easier when you are in last.
I know that they want Destiny to appeal to everyone, but this is ridiculous.
Random rant: I have seen more last place finishers get 320 gear than any other place.

So they help the people who don't play as well compete with the people who do play well. Instead of implementing a skill/rank based matchmaking (think Halo 2), they give the last place a leg up. You can tell this by reading the patch notes on Titans. They're trying to get everyone on the "ideal" 1.0 k/d, as if everyone is equal and as if all the classes are equal. I don't have a problem with balanced classes. But sometimes the good players gravitate to one class for various reasons, raising that class' k/d, thus causing a nerf for that class (and maybe a buff for others). Here's a snippet from an update:
Given all that, we arrive at these simple goals for Titans: Solar Titan Bring down the average KDR so it's closer to the ideal (1.0) Arc Titan Bring average KDR up so that they are competitive with other Subclasses.
