Hope you're right. To me luke ignoring his duty as a Jedi only happened previously when he wanted to protect his friends. Now he did it because he failed, quite the opposite.

  • Think of the most abysmal failure you could have in life, and multiply it by death. Not only was he unable to guide Ben Solo, but he lost him to hate and anger, which resulted in the death of every other Padawan he was training to be a Jedi. And bigger than that: he failed Lei and Han, in his mind anyways. My read on this is he did what Ben Kenobi did: withdrew to a desolate area for reflection and meditation until he could pull himself together enough to feel be a Jedi again.

  • Big difference being Ben kenobi did it on the planet Luke was on to protect him.

  • Who was left for Luke to protect? Unless Rey is his daughter, as far as he knows, all (good) force users are gone, and maybe he thinks that's what he is doing to protect the universe -- remain unseen and far away from those your presence may hurt.

  • The republic. The resistance. All the people the first order rule with an iron fist. Han, leia, Chewie, anyone that's a target of Kylo ren who is his responsibility to stop.

  • The resistance? The republic? It's his duty as a Jedi.

  • Obi-Wan should take the same criticism, then. He let the Emperor and Darth Vader run Ramshod for over 20 years. Don't forget the human toll; unless you've actually experienced large scale failure or loss, you really cannot know how you will deal with it.

  • The clear difference being obi-wan vs the empire by himself versus Luke and the resistance and the republic vs the first order? Not even close.

  • You seem to have forgotten the rebel alliance. They were there for 20 years while Ben sat in a cave on Tatooine.
