Huge Star Wars fan. Hated the movie. Too many plot holes and overall very bad direction of the story. So many of the characters were doing things that it was really hard to believe they would be doing based off of the previous 6 movies. Luke hiding?? Lame. R2d2 sleeping?? Pointless. Han going back to what he was doing in his twenties instead of trying to get his son back, staying with leia, searching for Luke?? Retarded. The rebellion became the resistance instead of joining the republic it originally sprang from?? Didn't give us one reason for that. The resistance being weak as all -blam!- and barely acknowledging admiral ackbar or nien nub?? I just don't get it. The first order following a non human when the empire has always always been about humans only?? Makes no sense. The first order making the same dumb mistake that the empire made with the first two Death Stars? A -blam!-ing joke. No legit space battles all of them were in planet. Watching Poe was great all other ships sucked. Complete waste of Max Von sydow as some random character who we thought might be wedge Antilles but instead is some character we've never heard of. Light saber battles were pathetic. Finn being a non force user landing a blow on a trained sith is a joke. Apparently Rey is the strongest Jedi of all time with no explanation. Garbage movie.

  • After ep.6 Luke was training new Jedi until one of them, Kylo Ren, betrayed him and killed the rest of the padawans. After that, Luke went into hiding due to dissappointment in himself. Similarly, Han left due to him being dissapointed in himslef for not being a better father to Ben (Kylo Ren), he also might not have been able to look at Leia since he feels he let her down. When Luke left it might have been around the time when Rey was born, now I don't think Rey is a Skywalker but I think Luke was able to sense her since she appears to be very connected to the Force, so because of this he told R2 to remain in low power mode until Rey is near him. I personally think it was a great movie and some potholes will be filled the next movie.

  • Hope you're right. To me luke ignoring his duty as a Jedi only happened previously when he wanted to protect his friends. Now he did it because he failed, quite the opposite.

  • Think of the most abysmal failure you could have in life, and multiply it by death. Not only was he unable to guide Ben Solo, but he lost him to hate and anger, which resulted in the death of every other Padawan he was training to be a Jedi. And bigger than that: he failed Lei and Han, in his mind anyways. My read on this is he did what Ben Kenobi did: withdrew to a desolate area for reflection and meditation until he could pull himself together enough to feel be a Jedi again.

  • Big difference being Ben kenobi did it on the planet Luke was on to protect him.

  • Who was left for Luke to protect? Unless Rey is his daughter, as far as he knows, all (good) force users are gone, and maybe he thinks that's what he is doing to protect the universe -- remain unseen and far away from those your presence may hurt.

  • The republic. The resistance. All the people the first order rule with an iron fist. Han, leia, Chewie, anyone that's a target of Kylo ren who is his responsibility to stop.

  • The resistance? The republic? It's his duty as a Jedi.

  • Obi-Wan should take the same criticism, then. He let the Emperor and Darth Vader run Ramshod for over 20 years. Don't forget the human toll; unless you've actually experienced large scale failure or loss, you really cannot know how you will deal with it.

  • The clear difference being obi-wan vs the empire by himself versus Luke and the resistance and the republic vs the first order? Not even close.

  • You seem to have forgotten the rebel alliance. They were there for 20 years while Ben sat in a cave on Tatooine.

  • You're using the term "plothole" incorrectly, because this movie had few, if any, actual plotholes.

  • I disagree. Maybe if this movie exists in a vacuum it has none. Yet it doesn't, it has 6 other movies that take place in the universe and within the same family.

R2D2 is mourning the disappearance of Luke, Luke is hiding because he's disappointed with Kylo and the fact Kylo slaughtered all of the padawans, The First Order's purpose is too destroy the Jedi A.K.A Luke, though I'll give you the mistake with the Death Star, that was pretty disappointing.

  • Lol a droid is mourning the loss of Luke? No dummy. Luke knew Rey would find her way to R2. That's why R2 woke up.

  • They explicitly said that R2 shut himself down after Luke went missing, sounds like mourning to me.

  • I think he was in low power mode (like they said) and was basically running a background task trying to put pieces of the map together. He had been in that low power mode for years it sounded like. Years sounds like adequate time for a mobile super computer to finish a crazy hard task.

  • So Artoo woke up event though the map wasn't completed? He could somehow sense the missing part of the map was nearby? Nah dude. Rey is a Skywalker. He was waiting for a Skywalker.

  • Rey has Skywalker blood but she's s solo she's han and leias daughter if you watched the movie you can see it from the interaction between han and Rey and Leia and rey

  • No she's not. You really think while Han and Leia are waxing poetic about losing their son they wouldn't say anything to their daughter? You think they wouldn't go pick her up off Jakku? She's a Skywalker from Luke. For further proof when Kylo Ren is force cracking Reys mind Ren says "I can see the ocean, I can see the island." Guess where Luke was at? On an island, in the ocean. How could she know that unless she had been there? Rey is Lukes daughter.

  • No it doesn't. They said artoo shut himself down when Luke left. That's the end of the story. For all we know artoo shut himself down because the Resistance ran out of strawberry space icecream. You have no proof that any other scenario is more true than that. It's all guessing. My guess is that Luke told Artoo to wait for another Skywalker. Artoo has been with every Skywalker in the Star Wars universe. I don't think it's too crazy that he would recognize another one.
