OK since this is a discussion thread I can actually breakdown what I thought of the movie here instead of very general BS.
The overall pacing was a lot slower than I expected but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it also still had some good moments.
Some of the Dialogue seemed a bit forced but a good portion was witty and I enjoyed the banter.
I like the character development
Ren's face.... nuff said.
Some of it was pretty predictable (not always a bad thing), especially Han's Death
I'm all for Rey being an awesome Jedi but her force powers were very "Deus ex Machina" toward the end, I mean she thought the Jedi were nothing but a myth up until mid movie and she's had literally no training in the force.
Even a wounded Ren should of bested both of them with ease, noted he wanted to recruit Rey but still.
Wouldn't a weapon that absorbs the sun completely destabilize that entire system? Food for thought
The soundtrack is fantastic, John Williams is a master of his craft
Trilogy once again starts with the search for droid(s)
I feel the whole reason for Luke's disappearance was stupid, sure through him a sith rose up and killed all the padawans but to just get up and leave it all seems like the worst decision. GET OUT THERE AND STOP THIS FOOL LIKE THE MASTER YOU ARE.
I'm glad J.J. didn't rely heavily on CG
Lots of imagery, whether it was too much or not is up to you
Maybe a little too many similarities to the original trilogy? Might just be me
The film does a good job reintroducing people to the star wars universe while setting a very solid foundation for the rest of the trilogy, I look forward to where it goes from here

My only gripe was how Rey was coming to barely learn her force powers, and she had to focus to force the trooper to let her go, then quickly snapped at him to leave his gun and he dropped it just seemed to ruin the whole point of the scene for the sake of comedy. But other than that I loved the movie, I feel like there's a lot more to the Knights of Ren slaughtering Luke's students, because as you said, he's Luke. He should be out kicking ass and stopping them. I think it's obvious at this point that Rey is Luke's daughter, so perhaps Ben killed his wife and that's why he hid her? It would be a neat nod to the EU plot where Jacen falls to the dark side and kills Mara Jade. Also shoutout to the new Porkins surviving the assault on star killer base, and that little nod to the trench run at the end

Edited by IS0M0RPHIC: 12/19/2015 7:29:34 PMIn a nutshell it was a good movie but one the played it safe, and can we really blame them?
but I think the reason Luke left was not only because of his failure but because he got his sisters son turned into a mass murderer, if I got my nephew turned into a murderer I wouldn't be able to look at any of my family members in the face ever again.
If you remember yoda ran and hid too on dagoba and he was the most powerful Jedi to ever live only with Luke coming of age did Yoda make his presence known again

Edited by Visarar: 12/19/2015 3:54:21 PMI understand the idea of "Rens face" but really. I found it suiting for the character. I was really impressed with him as a whole. Once he started acting I forgot about his face. I mentioned this in another thread but I'll drop it here also.. My take on Kylo is that because he has a conflicting light, he is constantly chasing this "dark side"'of himself that he wants so badly and is always trying to find... He doesn't have the natural darkness of Vader when he crosses over. He only lives in a shadow of his grandfather and his darkness is sometimes so artificial and forced that it makes him more of a loose canon. This will make him a much more dangerous enemy to the Resistance and Jedi. Overall I think Kylo stole the show and can't wait to see this character flushed out more and more to his end.

I have a feeling Rey just insta-mastered the Force because she's more powerful than both Anakin and Luke. Just a suspicion, but still. She's probably a Skywalker as well.
-
Even if she is stronger with the force compared to Luke and Anakin, She requires training to even know how to use the force. I understand it being a power that's "all around us" and that whole bit but in this movie it was just too "deus ex machina" which bothers me
-
I like to believe the Force was so easy to use for her because she's THAT adept. It could also be that the Light Side is heavily focused through her, with her and Luke being the only living Light Side users in the galaxy.
-
Pretty much my summary of this movie. Not bad, but relies on the previous formula a tad too much. Still awesome though!
-
Agreed, and I really like the new cast. I'm looking forward to seeing their characters develop over the next 2 movies

The starkiller became a new sun when it exploded. Don't know how but k
-
...hey at least it looked pretty XD
-
I thought it was going to collapse into a black hole
-
Plus the entire disappearance/relocation of the sun would totally mess up that system. Plenty of incorrect science but hey, it's a fictional movie
-
It probably did mess up the system. First Order just gave zero shits. I mean, they used the damn thing to wipe out Coruscant's system.

Edited by Excarkun: 12/18/2015 5:11:20 PMOnly one comment to your questions or comments. Luke Skywalker and why he ran away and hid. My theory is Disney has not told us the whole story yet. Because I bet his family may have all also been killed off by that rouge Sith student. Or so he thought. so he lost in one attack not only helis long work on creating a new Jedi order but also his Wife & kids or just a daughter. Yes I believe Rey will be his long lost daughter .thought to be dead. And maybe him going after the or those Sith Lords for vengeance would have put him into the dark side. So this would of scared the crap out of him..because he does not want to be like his father and become another Darth Vader
-
In the EU, Jacen was supposed to kill Luke's wife. Probably did the same in the new trilogy. There's also the fact that his own nephew is the one who butchered his new order. That'd be pretty defeating after Episode 6. All that time Luke spent fighting the Skywalker desire to turn to the Dark Side, and then it's just like "lel fuk u, ill just skip a generation."
-
It doesn't always have to be vengeance, more so this guy is bad news for the galaxy and I have to stop him.

Edited by Excarkun: 12/18/2015 6:22:37 PMBut lets put our selves in Luke's story life.. raised by Uncle and Aunt. Told from day one real parents dead. Then finds uncle and Aunt burnt alive.. Then kinda knew old Ben... and some how quickly gets kinda creepy close to him... then soon after also sees him die....or become one with force (whatever) Now take into the account that during first deathstar battle and on ..he has witness lots of old time friends or new ones die... Everyone in galaxy is terribly or deathly afraid of Darth Varder. And all heard the many terrifying sick cold heated and lack of empathy killings he done. Like a HITLER.. To find out that man is your real dad. Wow what a sick feeling to have in your stomach ..again I guess it would be like just like being told HITLER is really your dad moment... Then to make close bonds with yoda like he has with Ben...and then have him and Ben both tell him..he must kill his father.(we know why he is really the biggest Sith Lord threat in galaxy not the emperor) .. But he is now real blood family who he has never got to find out who he really is..and with the force he can feel the conflicted good in Anakin that seems to want to come out..... So then he sees yoda also become one with force(again whatever)...or die...shrug And learns he has a long lost twin sister..who also he learns she also has force simular to his because of there daddy.. But he also for two movies had the hots for her and was competing with Han foe her affection.....Lol..yep sick So now he has to deal with that and maybe how that was messed up..... So now also a new family with Han, Chewy, Leia and droids oh and Lando...so they are important to him greatly ..so much ge Almost dies to a tag team of father and emperor ...But he was some what right father does have some good in him as well and wants a family again...and sacafices self to save Luke... So now Luke will always have a hidden self guilt.. Of what if!!! I just turned and then me and dad could of taken out emperor together..then dad would still be alive...and of course he would think he can possibly keep and have the other family he had too. Somehow..well it was her dad as well... Now it a also His job all alone to rebuild the Jedi academy..not a big galaxy wide job...Wow.. He does his best ..again by himself. And also raises his new wife kids or family. This is most likely with them also intertwined with his Jedi academy (job)..He now has no choice he must trust these new recruits to help out because the job is such a task. One or his best student's turns on him...(who knows why) and not only does this student do a Anakin SkywalkerJedi academy massacre..but also targeted Luke's family as well. Luke now has more New guilt he put his wife kids in danger and they paid for it with there lives...and so did all the other students and there families..not only will he lost those people trust that lost kids or family members live in that massacre.. that he did NOT keep safe...But I bet the New Republic would not ever trust him either.. he failed on so many levels... He runs or hides because: 1) he used the force and sees he needs too. 2) he now feels like a total failure..and alone again lost his new family failed to keep them safe..in his mind his fault.. He also needs time to hide from the New threat. assess himself.. get over this new emotional setback family lost ... and more....remember now...in old republic the Jedi academy would not allow marriage..but Luke wouldn't know this...and we see now clearly why.. they are a huge distraction..and weakness that can be exploited by a Sith.. In other words I think the Luke character is a emotionally a mess..and can very well fighting himself from turning to the darkside..for years now....

No I understand your point, I just don't think complete isolation was the best answer
-
Hey it works for the movie... How do we know that Luke also wasn't stranded??
-
Edited by Mezuka: 12/18/2015 7:30:58 PMHow do we know he wasn't?
-
And maybe Rey was his sole surviving daughter, and Luke wanted to try and prevent her falling to the dark side, so he went to Jakku and left her there.
-
But who he leave her with??

That fat scavenger alien that pays the rations
