I disagree with removing range as a stat. The main range-related balance problems stem from two things:
1. There is no standardized measurement of range across all weapon archetypes. In fact, sometimes range measurements vary from gun to gun in the SAME archetype. For example, say your average handcannon has 20 range. Does that mean it can land accurate shots from 20 meters? Due to the handcannon accuracy problem, probably not. Now compare that handcannon to The Last Word. TLW has 6 range, but is able to cross-map people like a sniper. This clearly makes no sense, especially when you realize that we don't even know what the range stat is supposed to represent. Does 20 range = this gun can land headshots at 20 meters? I dunno.
2. Range and Damage Falloff are completely different stats. Guns like hardlight have no damage falloff, but that doesn't translate to the gun having 100 as its range stat. Though TLW has only 6 range, its lack of damage falloff allows those bullets to become sniper shots. Most of the time the range stat has no bearing on the gun's actual damage falloff, and this means when bungie nerfs the range on guns those bullets won't actually be affected. TLW's range nerfs are a prime example of this problem
TLDR: since we don't know what a gun's range stat is supposed to represent, and a gun's range can sometimes have no effect on its actual damage falloff, the weapon balancing relating to range makes no sense at all
EDIT: Also, a gun's range have no relationship with its aim assist, accuracy, recoil, and stability. None of these stats make any real sense when you look at them closely. Just cause a gun has long range doesn't mean its recoil won't throw off any accurate shot outside of shotgun distance. Your sniper's super low stability is irrelevant if your sky high aim assist locks you on your target automatically. I believe a gun's stability and aim assist should be at least partially linked. This also goes for range and damage falloff.
EDIT EDIT: Bungie, guns with nonexistent damage falloffs that negate their low range, and guns with sky high aim assist that counterract their low stability WILL ALWAYS BE A PROBLEM. if you think making a gun able to cross-map someone makes it "exotic" you're wrong. They're just stupid and OP and redundant because we know you'll nerf them into oblivion in 5 minutes anyways
