Guys i just caught ebola from reading some of the comments below... i dont have long to live, make sure you stay in school.
Do people realise this?
In a game with a sum total of 30 kills without any suicides, yes the sum will break even.
But the ratios will not necessarily add up to 1. Two different systems:
sum total kills/deaths = additive
KDR = divisive
Person A: 29 kills, 1 death = 29.0
Person B: 1 kill, 29 deaths = 0.03448276
Average KDR = 14.5172414
Sum kills-deaths = 30-30
Two different factors.

On one hand we have the average k.ds people adding 0.5 and 2.0 and getting 1.25
And on the other we have the dudes who are taking the total number of deaths and the total number of kills, calling it k.d and getting 1.0 (although with suicides etc it would be just less than 1.0)
These are two seperate threads imo....
I just had a conversation with a guy who was convinced that because a person gets 1 kill that means 1 person dies which means average K/D is 1.0..
i cant even..
EDIT: Im not saying that average is or isnt 1.0 im saying some people think the average K/D HAS to be 1.0 because when someone gets a kill someone dies..
THIS IS NOT THE AVERAGE K/D OF PLAYERS IN DESTINY!!!!
Actually it is. I'll use simple math so you can understand
Person A goes for 20 kills and 10 deaths (2.0 KD)
Person B goes for 10 kills 20 deaths (.5 KD)
The average of these 2 players is not 1.25... its 1.0
30 kills, 30 deaths, 1.0 KD

2 kills 1 death vs 1 kill 2 deaths
3 kills 3 death... Kd of 1 lmao what
I cant -blam!-ing even...

1 ReplySorry, but KD is a divisitive based on your OVERALL kills and deaths. Not game by game.
-
Guys, it isnt 1.0 People can get killed by the surrounding (jumping down etc.) it wont register a kill for someone, but it does register a Death.

1 ReplyEdited by Moonglow89: 12/4/2015 12:47:15 AMThe RaZoR guy was talking about a moving average. Game 1: 20 kills, 10 deaths = 2.0 KDR Game 2: 10 kills, 20 deaths = 0.5 KDR Average of two games: = 2.5 / 2 = 1.25 He was talking about the running (moving) average. In which case, yes, it would be 1. Your KDR reported on your profile is a running average. Using an example for running average: Game A: 2 kills, 1 death = 2.0 KDR Game B: 10 kills, 2 deaths = 5.0 KDR two game average = (2.0 + 5.0) / 2 = 3.5 KDR. A running average totals up EACH CATEGORY before dividing it, to give you a better approximation of how each game goes. The game where he had a 5.0 KDR with then move the average closer to it. Game A&B Total kills = (2 + 10) = 12 Total deaths = (1 + 2) = 3 Running Average then = 12/3 = 4 KDR It is higher than the two game average because the game with the higher KDR has more kills and shifts the total of each category to give you a better running average.

To get the average K/D of the entire population you'd have to add up everyone's kills and everyone's deaths. From there you do the normal division for the average k/d. That's elementary math really lol. I'll do an example so everyone can see. Say I go 20-2, my teammate goes 10-5, and a random goes 2-15 in a game of skirmish (this math is accurate because randoms suck). That's 32 total kills and 22 total deaths. The average K/D of my team that game was 1.45

They dont calculate overall kd by finding the average of your kd's in each gane but by dividing total kills by total deaths though
-
Your friend is right to an extent. Yes 1 person gets a kill while one does so everything should even out to a 1.0 KD. But what he's not accounting for is non-player deaths, I.e. Falling of the back part of shores of time while trying to jump away from a shotgunner (not that this has happened to anyone of course). Knowing this, it is impossible that this community can have a total of a 1.0 KD and will always be lower then 1.0. It can also never increase only decrease because like your friend said, every kill is a trade in the communities overall KD, but non-player deaths only count against it

4 RepliesProblem is that 1 KD is the even number. By this I mean that anything less than a 1 is actually a negative Number. .5 means you've died twice as often as you've killed. So adding the two KD numbers doesn't really work out. So you're right, it's not just "basic math". Since .5 represents a negative KD, you have to subtract it from 2. 1.5 divided by 2 is .75, which is what the actual stats bear out. .7-.8 is the average when you look at actual figures. But KD isn't simple. If you go 14-0, it's the same as 14-1. But that remainder doesn't make it to the stats, since you can't divide by zero. So yeah, KD calculation isn't that simple and isn't displayed in game exactly right. Plus suicides and environmental hazards don't factor in right. It's a cluster-blam!-.

3 RepliesLiterally, the only reason the average K/D of all players is not 1.0, is because of people that suicide. You can 1v1, and have player one get 2 kills, 1 death, But Player 2 has 1 kill, 4 deaths (2 of which are suicides). That's 2.0 and 0.25, which is 0.5 average. For those saying that 2.0 and 0.5 do not average to 1.0... Pull your heads out of your asses. When dealing with KDR, your "averages" are solved with multiplication. If you were dealing with straight KD, the kind that isn't done with ratios, you would have +1 instead of 2.0, and -1 instead of 0.5. This, with addition and division, averages to 0. I repeat, the only reason that Global KDR is not 1.0, is because of Suicides, which massively inflate the Death count, and do not affect the Kill count. Therefore, Global KDR is Less Than 1.0 is True.

Nice job explaining it 4 different ways. Hopefully that will be enough. But I'm not so sure.
-
3 RepliesWho could read this?? And who cares??
-
2 RepliesEach kill adds a death. But not each death adds a kill(suicide). Thus average kd is always below one.
-
22 RepliesThe average person has less than 2 legs, fact
-
So he was calculating overall K/D not average K/D
-
2 RepliesI am telling you that the average K/D is 1...because mine is one...and it says I am ranked around the top 48% so that is average in my book.

Mean=sum/sum of items

*pulls out calculator* (2.0 + 0.5) / 2 = .... Dear God, he's right!
-
You're averaging the ratios; you should be adding all total kills, adding all total deaths and divide the sums to get a new ratio. One that will be less than 1.0. Hilarious that you're calling people stupid and all the while, you're adding ratios and dividing. You're the one doing it wrong, dumbass.

Too much math in this thread, have to go now
-
2 RepliesSo does anyone know what the actual average is?
-
Can we just all agree that all the math used in this topic is being used to make that person's point right. And I say we get Bungie to chime in and let us know what they go by and what their number is.

LoL Ebola transmission from comments confirmed! HaXx!

15 RepliesI kill you twice, you kill me once. My K/D is 2.0. Yours is 0.5. Our average is NOT 1.0. End of discussion.

1 ReplyAnyone else read this and seen two different math(s im from the uk its maths..) problems going on? On one hand we have the average k.ds people adding 0.5 and 2.0 and getting 1.25 And on the other we have the dudes who are taking the total number of deaths and the total number of kills, calling it k.d and getting 1.0 (although with suicides etc it would be just less than 1.0) These are two seperate threads imo....

5 RepliesWell, Get ready for me to break the numbers with one word Suicides
