No the challenge mode wasn't terribly challenging, but none of the Destiny raid content thus far has ever been crushingly difficult. With so many people having to "LFG" their way through the raid, I don't think such a thing would be appropriate.
For the first time in a long while, the raid actually felt rewarding (and for everyone on the fireteam no less). Bungie did a good thing in my book.

Fully agree. If CM means that once per week you are guaranteed at least one 320 item per character then that's great in my book. I never expected CM to add more than 10 minutes of content. Ok, it has added nothing new (and I now don't expect it to as I have beaten golgo by switching gaze and oryx using every different method including using multiple runners) but it is an improvement. I just hope there is something new coming soon. Otherwise heaven help me I may have to buy a game, which i haven't don't since destiny alpha came out ...

I think this is a point that needs to be made more, Destiny is not the kind of game where you will wipe 500 times progressing on raid bosses, and It shouldn't try to be. I was actually ok with challenge mode, it was a little extra to think about with some decent extra rewards.
