Everyone needs to calm down for a second and take a deep breath. Yes, you were hoping for more. No, it is not THAT challenging. Yes, the loot is basically the only reason. No, Bungie did not lie.
Here's the thing to remember: If you are on these forums and you have completed King's Fall, you are already in the top 8.5% of registered Destiny players in PvE. If you did so on Hard Mode, you're now in the top 2.7%. (Percentages derived from PSN trophy percentage stats. Screenshot here --> http://m.imgur.com/pfbQQFU)
If your Light is upwards of 315, or if you have all of the quest/mission locked exotics, you are the 1%. The 1% is the predominant portion of the fanbase pissed about challenge mode, but they're also the most skilled players in the game. So obviously they weren't going to be pleased with anything less than 15 additional modifiers and mechanic changes and insta-wipes and blah blah blah. Because that's the only way the game would even be remotely challenging for them anymore.
But Bungie can't predict the elite behavior of the 1% in development and playtesting. They have a limited amount of information to work with, and whether or not millions of players will use the mechanics the way they predict is impossible to guess. Hence pushing the Templar and Atheon off ledges, and being able to solo Crota and Skolas. The game was not designed for those things to be possible, and yet players of the most elite caliber figured it out and made it happen.
Now, if Bungie created a challenge mode of those boss fights where those methods of completion were the goal, the players who already did it would be furious, and the other 99% would find it insanely challenging. Why is King's Fall any different?
Most people in my raid group can't run the Warpriest Aura without consistently messing up, so we designate the more experienced players to do it instead. Most people in my raid group don't know how to run Golgoroth's Gaze, so we do the single orb strat. Most people in my raid group are awful at running relic against Sisters/Oryx, so we designate a runner and usually end up wiping if someone crappy gets it and messes up. Do you know why? Because most players are AVERAGE AT BEST at this game.
Challenge Mode is designed to be challenging for the AVERAGE player, and to give rewards to those skilled enough to complete it. For those who were already that good, it's a testament to your skill that you could already do what 90% of players probably can't. For those who can't already do it, it's a test that they'll have to put themselves against in order to earn the reward.
tl;dr Bungie designed Challenge Mode to challenge the AVERAGE PLAYER, not the Elite top 1% of the player base. They aren't mind readers and can't predict the behavior of the best of the best.
Edit 1: Changed the percentage numbers above to accurately reflect current PSN statistics.
Also, muted one user for saying I provided no proof, then when I offered to show him some specifically, he said that he didn't need proof to know I was wrong, and then called me an idiot.
I don't care if you disagree, just do it like an adult and we'll be fine.
Edit 2: 450+ replies and trending. Glad to see the forum is interested in a different side of the content argument. Thanks to everyone who has traded opinions with me so far today. Lots of common respect and solid argumentation, proving the forums aren't all bad.

5 RepliesEdited by AVERNL: 12/3/2015 1:11:29 AMHow in the world can the hardcore players still be this stupid? Literally, in some kind of weird, insane denial. There is NO precedent in this game to date that would suggest that the kind of crazy, obsessed grinding they do every week is ever going to make them feel elite/special/whatever they are going for with this approach. Every time new content has been released, nearly all top tier gear has become obsolete (or been obnoxious to upgrade). All three Raids to date have presented players with the best opportunity to acquire the CURRENT top tier gear. It has ALWAYS been a grind. Also of note, the delta between top tier and nearly top tier has NEVER been great. Level 30 was not that much better than 29, level 32 not much better than 31 etc. etc. Literally the only times you notice this small difference is doing the RAIDS.....again.....when trying to grind it out every week. My point being....if you do not enjoy playing the Raid three times a week.....THEN DO NOT DO IT! In a few months the bar will be raised again and the cycle will repeat......and all your effort for this magical new number will have been in vain. Bungie introduces a challenge mode that gives you better access to top tier gear and you complain it is not hard enough???! It is almost as if....you have been conditioned to DESIRE the grind. You want to spend countless hours doing the same Raid activity (that you probably do not even like doing) so you can get this faux top level stuff that is the definition of fleeting. Get a grip people.....seriously. People toss CASUAL around like its some sort of insult. The majority of us are casual players....and honestly....as time marches on we observe pure lunacy from the "elite" on an almost weekly basis. You guys are jaded, you are a collective emotional rollercoaster of nonsense.....and from the outside looking in.....its amusing bordering on sad. /end rant

6 RepliesIs doing challenge mode warpriest the same thing as doing just normal warpriest? What changes???
-
Ok, so you say that Challenge Mode was meant for the AVERAGE player because most of the Destiny players are AVERAGE, yet you contradict yourself by citing the small percentages of players that have actually completed the raid in either mode. If they were truly catering to the average player - i.e., casual - then they would have made the raid encounters EASIER. Granted, those PSN numbers aren't entirely accurate because they include anybody that's played at least a second of Destiny, but I would still say the vast majority of players have yet to complete any raid.
-
im 319 light and i don't care about some elitist bs challenge. it's a challenge for the average person to do KF. not the players like me who play too often and never die in the raid.
-
Who says the modifiers have to be the same every week. What if in 3 weeks it's incrementally harder on Warpriest? Why not start out soft and ramp it up?
-
I was guaranteed a fragment, and 2 pieces of 320 gear whats to complain about?
-
I can understand giving the casual players an easier challenge in Normal KF. However, for the Hard Mode version to not be hard, is a sign of just how lazy and out-of-touch Bungie is with their most fanatic playerbase.
-
Too many variables that are unavailable to you for you to make this "claim" Let me metaphorically put this in perspective for you. Youre saying all the worlds cheerleaders, including the ones who have died. Arent cheering in the big game because they think its too hard. When in reality they arent cheering because their school sucks and there isnt any reward worth returning to the next game for.

29 RepliesEdited by gfuup: 12/2/2015 2:16:21 PMFinally guaranteed 320 drops and people are complaining, ffs. It's only the SPECIAL SNOWFLAKES who wanted these challenges harder so they can prance around the tower feeling all special with gear most people can't get :) That's why all the streamers are pissed, they can't be idolised if any casual can achieve the same. Well done Bungie, power to the people :)

Edited by Spronic-: 12/3/2015 10:42:13 AMThey way I see it, that at the minimum, this challenge was meant to be easy. Think of it like this... You're a player that doesn't do the raid, you play a bit, but you do pvp, somewhat. But there's no real way to get over 300 or whatever. Doing everything up to totems is doable for almost anyone, with time and patience (even on hard). So (even if they were to do it on normal), besting the first few checkpoints and totems (which can be tough), would be worth the effort. Hell, maybe they get a group at the checkpoint. Point is, they give it a shot, and some players complete it. Then they get there reward, and guess what? Not only were they able to do that, but now they have a team (possibly) and they've now got the light. So why not continue on? This was made to be inclusive, made to be introductory. The next will be tough. This was made to get more people raiding. Which is a great thing for the community, and I stand by that!
-
People saying that challenge mode should have been for the 1% are wrong. It's was always meant to be part of the game for the average player. I get this conclusion from the fact that there are calcified fragments available from them, and they are relatively easy for everyone to get.
-
The challenge could have been a little more, but why would I complain about some of the best loot I've gotten since the raid came out?

7 RepliesEdited by TheFrozenInferno: 12/2/2015 9:21:20 PMAfter running the hard mode Warpriest challenge with LFG groups on both of my characters, I can say that it's no cakewalk for the average player. Both times it took roughly an hour and multiple tries, even with most of the team being 310-313, because not everybody has a set group that can blow through everything. If you have a dedicated raid group or clan, good for you. It must be nice to play with the same group and just steamroll the raid multiple times a week. Most of us rely on LFG, and results are a mixed bag. The challenge mode will be laughably easy for an established raid team. It'll be tough for an average team. No matter how easy it is it comes down to being the best loot drop in the game and more players will be able to benefit from them than just the mega hardcores who have pretty much everything they need already. It got my hunter from 309 to 311, and my titan from 308 to 309. I got to pick up two 320 Terminus machine guns (my previous highest heavy was a 308 Terminus) and infuse my Sleeper up to 314 with my other heavy drops, not to mention 320 artifacts for both characters and leftover 310's that I can stash for whenever I get around to making a Warlock. I'm pretty pumped about that. I'm an average player, good but not superman, and I only have so much time in the week to play and gear up. Challenge mode has been a godsend.

Your first edit is awesome!

Are we still nerfing everything though? I say challenger mode is OP, nerf it, now!

10 RepliesSorry no. No cop out for bungie. Challenge mode should have been the content the 1% wanted. Challenge mode isn't for everyone. It's extra content you don't need to complete. Considering they had a "norma" and "hard" version for the challenge modes they could have easily made this excuse for normal players and something challenging for the top players. Yes destiny isn't designed for the amount of time some people put in. Yes the hard core community is smaller. No that doesn't mean they should be ignored. And your using the numbers to fit your view. Just because a small amount of people have completed normal does not equal it being too hard to complete for normal people. Same applies for hard mode. I'll tell you right off the bat I haven't attempted hard mode. Why? Because there is no reason to. No exclusive items i'm interested in and the light level I can be now is enough to handle any content below hard mode. Now if HM had an exotic weapon locked behind it I might attempt it. (not saying I want that.) Point is you're not looking at every possibility. Plus your claim about raids being the content for the top 1% works both ways. If it's meant for the 1% then it should be as hard as they want it. And it's not meant for the average players. So you wouldn't have any standing with complaining that the content is too hard for the average players. so it needs to be made easier for you. Trials of osiris isn't for everyone. yet people seem perfectly fine with light house gear being gated behind that fact. Datto and the rest of the 1% have a right to complain about this. They are just as important as the majority who play. Bungie has been very keen on giving every type of player content for them to do. That's why trials even exists. So giving the 1% one piece of content even if it's just the hard version of challenge modes is more then fair. Especially when so much of the rest of the game is casual friendly. Even call of duty has something for the top players. league play. The facts are both bungie and the hard core players are at fault here. Bungie for once again failing to deliver decent content that was asked for by the community. They had several ways to handle this. Especially considering how long they took to add challenge mode and especially considering a handful of very well known and community based people have tossed out ideas through out the TTK release. There was no excuse for it. It's just further rushed half baked content in order to try and keep people around. And it's the hard core players fault for setting their expectations too high. While these ideas came across to them easily how frequently does Bungie listen to the community and then implement it in the game? now reduce those times each time they did so but not add it into the game the way we asked. In short Bungie is at fault for being a let down and being fairly lazy. Hard core players are at fault for thinking bungie wouldn't let them down and give them exactly what they wanted. It's never that easy with AAA studios. And please, don't call me a bungie basher. I have enjoyed plenty of things about destiny. and i've defended most things they chose to do since the beginning. I still do. But Bungie makes mistakes and nothing is wrong with stating that. If half of you even watched datto's video he said the worst part of this whole thing is that it's going to bring in a bunch of negativity about destiny that's not even related. He and the other hard core players enjoy destiny. You can like something and still complain about it. Liking something doesn't mean it's perfect to you. And disliking something doesn't mean you don't ever enjoy the game. Datto was actually mostly constructive with his video. Which is surprising considering usually when it comes to things he dislikes he's rather childish about it. (like admitting he'd be fine with thorn and shotguns being nerfed to uselessness because he hates them.) And I usually disagree with him. But for once he's got a valid point. and neither he nor the other hard core players deserve the heat they have been getting for being open about their thoughts. This isn't about human ethics. where someone being openly racist isn't okay. This is a video game. people can have different opinions and that's okay.

I think everyone should calm down. The bosses progress in difficulty throughout the raid, and I expect challenge mode to as well. What we are seeing is an intro to the loot, which is good. It means more players will attempt the next challenge. Let's wait and see what the future challenges bring before we completely shit on the devs who delivered a pretty solid raid to begin with.

2 RepliesEdited by Savage: 12/3/2015 12:55:05 AMI do not agree that challenge mode should be built for the casuals. Just like other pve content in other games, there is usually several difficulty levels. The highest difficulty level on most games can't be beat by casuals, it's for the skilled and shows just how good you are. This challenge mode should have been made to be a mark of prestige among the community, not the participation trophy that it turned out to be for us regular raiders :/ Bungie should have made challenge mode a third option when choosing difficulties, not put on both. It shouldn't have been something people were forced into. By this way people would still be able to get there 320 gear from hard mode and those of us that wanted that extra gear or emblem or (hopefully) secret exotic would have something to show for what we accomplished. Edit: I also can't stand how people keep talking about the one percent, the one percent...the last I checked (awhile ago) that comes off of registered players which was at like 20 million (idk if it's more now)...well 1% is still 200,000 players! I've seen others say 2-5% have done hard mode so that's what 400,000 to 1,000,000 players that have been left dissatisfied?
-
You actually hit the nail on head I can't even complain about anything you said I agree 100%
-
1 ReplyThey also can't change much due to the fact that the challenge mode is there and not toggle able. This means that a group that doesn't want to do the challenge can, and that's why they can't change mechanics
-
1 ReplyI was actually going to re install destiny to try challenge mode, I'm glad you've told me I made the right decision in not doing so😂
-
Good post OP. I agree, whilst some of my lot did the challenge we did have to help some of them through and there are still several waiting to do it. OK it's perhaps not the greatest of challenges but if it was set like the Lighthouse trip then 90% of the players would be moaning they cant do the challenge. Anyway we do not know if this challenge was simply a warm up to harder one's...
-
Personally I would have liked them to quadruple Warpriest health, cut the time you get to dmg him in half, and you have to do it in one round. Bet there would be some great post out there right now if they did that.
-
2 RepliesDo you get the trophy for completing the entire raid or just for killing Oryx? Because I imagine that a lot of people have done parts of kings fall, but not the whole thing.
-
Im just disappointed it too so long to release this when it was already in the game.
