Old gen struggles with large open areas, that's why everywhere is sharded. That's also why games like fallout 4 are new gen only.
I would love to go down into this city were defending , or go explore the areas on Venus that are just over the water, but sadly were restricted, you can look, but you can't touch

But the combination of bungie's "engine" plus old gen plus P2P hosting means they don't have the infrastructure in place to do that. So how exactly have I been "rekt" ?, Try using your brain and looking at the reasons people offer up instead of getting buthurt because you don't like or agree with them.

No but enough stuff is happening on last gen with plenty of destruction also PC multiplayer mod ran just fine.

Defending the city would be a good limited time/occasional event for pve, comparable to the iron banner.

Fallout 3 - 360 Skyrim - 360 Hell, gta 3 did it on PS2 Zelda games on n64. Actually, plenty of Zelda games were open world Dark souls, which was somewhat linear at times, but had huge areas which every inch was explorable

Are any of them on line multiplayer ?, Dark souls to an extent had co op, but even their areas are sharded during that. I would love it to be a fully open world , but I don't think the engine coupled with older gen can generate it fast enough and consistent for 16 people at once, If the game was on dedicated servers, it should be possible, but that's down to bungie to invest in

You're telling me the fact that three people can patrol together is the reason why we cannot explore? You're telling me that's the reason why we don't get an actual open world? Because we could explore with two other people? Not to mention, games like grand theft auto 3, which the world was huge, was on PlayStation 2. You're telling the Xbox one can't handle 1 to 3 people running around a completely open world?

The xbone and ps4 are more then capable , but the game is built around the lowest common denominator ( old gen tec ) so essentially its dumbed down for the systems to run, Each instance needs to be recreated & synced ( up to ) 16 times, that's the amount of players in any one area at the same time, The engine coupled with old gen tec , and lack of dedicated servers means it would be slow, glitchy and horrible to try and play in an open world as all the calculations & variables are multiplied by 16, So they divided it up into sharded instances that load as you pass through each choke point, They could make the world bigger and more to explore, but it could never be truly "open"

A crude example if it helps to clarify it, Take a pen and write a sentence , Now tape two pens together and write the same sentence , Now , tape 16 pens together and try to write the same sentence. That's what's going on in each sharded area, all the information going on, who shot what, with what gun , damage done etc is calculated and related to 15 other people from you, in the mean time all the information the 15 other people are creating is being passed around everyone else,
